In the final chapter of our speaker discussion, we come to the most controversial aspects of car audio, the subwoofer.

Subwoofers gained popularity in the late 80’s when hip hop, or rap music became mainstream. Depending on your age, you either adored the Honda civic that you could hear six blocks away, or you despised it. Either way, subwoofers became a fixture, and regardless of how you feel about them, they are here to stay. But do you really need one?

The simple answer is yes, you need a subwoofer. Regardless of the music you listen play, there indeed exists part of the audio spectrum that not even the best two or three way speakers can reproduce. Most subwoofers will drop down to as low as 20 hertz. Far below the level of all other speakers. So the real question is, do you need a subwoofer to balance out the sound, or do you want to shake the seventeen cars around you. We can help regardless of what you intend to do with a subwoofer.

Before planning on adding a subwoofer, you need to make some some hard decisions. Subwoofers must have an amplifier that can drive them. There are two main setups we sell and install for subwoofer amplifiers. You can do a seperate one (called a monoblock)or two channel amp, where you bridge the two channels into one, or you use a channel from either a four or five way amp. Most serious installs with the idea is to really make serious thump, a monoblock amp is the go to for these installs. Monoblock amps can reach wattages all the way up to and past 3000 watts. But for the mainstream car audio enthusiast, a dedicated large amplifier is the choice. In my two vehicles, which are both considered to be on the upper end of car audio, I have a dedicated amp in the car, and use a channel off of a five channel amp to drive the subwoofer. I prefer the single dedicated amp setup, as it gives you more power, control, and down the road if you want more power it is easier to swap out.

The next decision to make is whether to go with a sealed enclosure, or a ported one. The enclosures we sell, or custom fabricate are usually made of high density particle board and covered in carpet or other fabric. Sealed enclosures are superior in delivering precise bass tones, ideal for sound quality enthusiasts seeking tight and accurate low frequencies. Ported boxes excel in producing maximum output and louder bass, catering to music genres with heavy beats. You can also tune ported boxes to concentrate on specific spectrum values, to the point where if you listen to only one particular genre of music, mainly hip-hop, the sound from these boxes is nothing short of insane.

Once you figure this out, it is time to select the subwoofer to use. In years past, the best way of selecting a superior subwoofer was the size of the magnet. However, engineering and advances in magnent technology has made this less of a case. The materials of the cone are important. As is the method of sealing the cone to the speakers basket. Usually, this seal is either rubber or foam. Both have advantages and disadvantages, but I tend to favor the rubber sealed speakers. We can show you a variety of subwoofers, and you can make this decision yourself.

The final piece of the puzzle is where to install the subwoofer. In a car, usually the trunk makes a great location for the subwoofer. Trucks we can either sell you a box that fits behind the seat, or construct one for under the back seat if you have a four door truck. SUV’s we can either fit a prebuilt box or construct one that allows for great sound, but still looks factory and allows for the loading of luggage.

There is another option that is growing in popularity, and these are factory boxes and matching speakers that are usually made of metal. This setup is extremely versatile, As these speakers are matched from the factory with the enclosure and the speaker. They will not reproduce huge sound levels, but in terms of sound quality, and visual appeal, they should be seriously considered.

There are other things to consider if you decide to go all out with a subwoofer setup. The first is power consumption. To drive the large amounts of sound these speakers can produce, you have to have an equally large power source. This sometimes entails adding a second battery and/or increasing the power of the car’s alternator.

Regardless of what level of sound you desire from the subwoofer, we are the experts in helping you achieve your dream setup. So come on down to the Sound Depot and let us hook you up with a subwoofer. We can design, and have installed subwoofers for anything from a Ford to Ferrari.

In our last post on speakers I gave an overview on speakers types and sizes. In this post we dive deep into what to look for in car audio speakers.

There are three main areas to measure a speaker. These are Sensitivity, Frequency Response, and Power Handling. All of these values are printed on the box of every speaker we sell. And we are eager to point out these values and what you can expect in your installation. So lets break it down

Sensitivity is how efficient the speaker is in converting electrical inputs into sound. They are measured in decibile levels, or dB. The higher the dB level is, the more efficient the speaker is in producing sound.

Frequency Reaponse is how much of the audio spectrum the speaker can produce. The measurment of speaker response is listing the reproduction range in Hertz, usually from about 60 to 20,000 Hz. A full range speaker will reproduce the entire spectrum the human ear can interpret. Full range speakers allow you to enjoy the low bass notes as well as the ultra high notes produced by violins, synthesizers and guitars. Although an all in one speaker can produce a full range of frequency response, component speakers allow for better staging, and this is very important when considering speaker selection.

The final area is where bragging starts, because manufacturers always display this number on packaging and marketing materials, usually in a carcy color and bigger font…Power Handling. Power handling indicates how much power a speaker can take before it starts to distort. The ability of a speaker to handle high power means you can run a large amplifier to it, and produce incredibile big sound. But a low power speaker defeats all of this, because the speaker gets overloaded and distortion begins to significantly impact the quality of sound. We can break down power handling into two main measurements, Peak Power, and RMS.

Peak power is the absolute maximum level a speaker can handle. Think of it as a redline on a car’s tachometer. Once you go past this level, the speaker can no longer handle the power and it begins to distort. Peak power is usually found in big bass notes. The hit on the drum causes an immediate spike in the audio signal, and thus when reproducing that series of notes in the system, the speaker will get the spike and try to reproduce the note. This sounds like cracking, or a muffles response when you drive a speaker past its peak limit.

RMS is the other measure. In the old days, RMS was thought of as “Rated Maximum Sound.” Back the about six people on the planet, and they all wore lab coats and hearing protection, knew that RMS refered to Root Means Squared. The acronym RMS is a mathematical equation that denotes how much continuous power the speaker can handle. The higher the RMS, the more power a speaker can take over a continuous period. A high RMS speaker can take big power over a long period of time.

One last, and very important thought with these speaker values is that the difference between an 85 dB speaker and a 90 dB speaker may seem small on paper ir 140 watts and 150 watts RMS, but are huge in terms of performance and sound quality.

So, like Paul Harvey, we have the rest of the story on speakers. At Sound Depot, our sales staff is extremely knowledgeable on these numbers, and what these numbers mean in reproducing sound inside of your vehicle. You can hear these differences on our demo equipment, and you can decide which of these values are important to you.

So come on down to the store and talk numbers with the staff. We can fit the best sound on the best budget of anyone in the state, and we stand behind our products and installs.

The Sound Depot is your one stop shop for high quality sound and installs for your vehicle.

On behalf of the staff of Sound Depot, we wish you and yours a safe and joyful holiday season. We appreciate our loyal customers, and are thankful for the trust you have placed in our business over the years. Thank you.

“Don't waste your money on a new set of speakers
You'd get more mileage from a cheap pair of sneakers.”

The above lyric is from Billy Joel’s famous song “It’s still rock and roll to me.” Although the song is great, these lyrics could not be farther from the truth. Speakers are the anthem of car audio.

In all the years of selling car audio, there have been exactly one decent set of factory speakers we have ever heard. And they came out of a Ferrari. We once did a 165 k Porsche, with a factory Bose system, and the speakers were just junk, paper cones, tiny magnets, and that system was a 6k up charge on the build sheet. Simply put, the old adage that “Stock Sucks” fits factory stereo speakers like a glove. So let’s talk about this issue and make sense of why it pays to play when upgrading factory stereo speakers.

First, size really matters. Speakers for car audio may seem intimidating when thinking of upgrading, but the reality is, they are the easiest of all the components to upgrade. Low to mid level cars and trucks these days have standard sizing. Most sedans will carry speakers in the front doors, and rear window decks. Some sedans will also have speakers in the rear doors as well. Trucks and SUV’s generally carry speakers in the doors and sometimes in the dash. But here st Sound Depot, we carry every size for every car on the planet. We have an industry leading speaker size software that is updated almost daily. Once we determine the size and where they go, then we can select a speaker for replacement.

You have a few choices when it comes to speaker types. Most speakers are what are known as co-axial speakers. This set up has two speakers mounted in the same physical space. Usually this is a mid base speaker, which can be round or oval. The large surface of the speaker reproduces the mid to low range of sound. Mounted on top of this speaker, is the tweeter, which makes the high notes. Another approach, which is more expensive, but produces better sound, is the component system. These systems usually seperate the mid/bass speaker from the tweeter, with the tweeter being mounted higher in the car’s cabin, usually on a pillar or in the dash. The advantage to separates is that sound produced by tweeters is more easily blocked than mid/bass speakers. For instance, speakers mounted in the bottom of a door panel shoot the music directly into the seat or the body next to the door. The mid/bass sound is easily transmitted to the ear, but the tweeters get lost. By moving the tweeters to a higher level, you get a much better mix or “staging” than a coaxial system. The only limiting factor here is your budget

Speakers tend to run fairly inexpensive for most models that develop excellent sound. But for those 1% that demand the best, we can accommodate those as well. Sound Depot carries Alpine, Morel, JVC, Sony, and others. Each line has a slightly different sound, and within each brand, they have several lines that allow you to pick and choose where to spend your dollars.

Speakers is one of those areas that we really recommend using our professional installers. In the old days you just climbed into the truck, pulled out the factory 6X9’s and slapped in a new pair of speakers and were good to go. These days, this is not the case. Removing a door panel replacing and wiring the speakers, and then reinstalling the panel so you don’t get squeaks and rattles is difficult. We have industry standard door panel pullers, replacement clips, and adapter rings that are crucial to getting a great sound and a factory looking install. We stand behind our installs, and when we put a new speaker in, it stays there and you never have to worry about cracking panels, or noisy clunks every time you hit a bump.

The other speaker that we install that I have not talked about are subwoofer(s.) this is a whole new category that deserves its own post. So stay tuned for that one.

So whether you want to shake the neighborhood, or install speakers so good you swear Taylor Swift is sitting on your lap, come on down to Sound Depot and let us help you find your speaker groove.

One of the most asked questions these days when upgrading a factory car stereo is do I really need an amplifier. The simple answer is YES!

Car amplifiers have been around since the late 1970’s when they entered mainstream car stereo stores. My first amplifier was a Pioneer 20 watt, nicknamed the porcupine amp because of the shape of the cooling fins. The Amp put out 20 watts in perfect conditions, with the only user controls being a simple slide switch. I bought the amp is 1978, and it was a draft horse in car audio. Interestingly, you can still buy them in working order on eBay, and believe me, once in a while I get tempted for nostalgia to get one. But I digress, so forgive me and let’s move on.

The best way to understand how these devices work is to imagine a simple garden hose. You turn the hose on, and the water flows through it. Works great for watering lawns and plants, but if you really want to do serious work with it, you need more force. You can attach a nozzle to it, this restricts the flow of water, and increases the pressure. This set up is adequate, but to really get the job done, you need a pressure washer. The pressure washer has an additional power source that takes the flow and significantly increases it, making that simple water hose an industrial strength cleaner.

Car amps do to audio what pressure washers do to a garden hose. These days, almost all car amps are class D powered. There are five main classes of amplifiers, A, B, AB, C and D. Class A and C were almost never used for car amps, and the standard until about 15 years ago was th AB. But the introduction of class D amps was a game changer in serious car audio.

The problem with amps has always been heat and distortion. That’s why A and C were almost never used in car audio because of the amount of heat generated and how inefficient they were, but they sounded really good, which is why they found use in guitar amps. But in a car, we need to be careful of heat, and the quality of the sound, ie, low distortion. The hybrid AB amps provided solid performance with acceptable distortion levels. But when sub woofers became common, and digital sources really made distortion notable, the industry pivoted to the king of amps, the Class D.

Class D are NOT digital amps. But they are highly efficient amps, and are able to channel the wasted heat into usable sound. Class D amps run from as little as 50 watts, all the way up to, and beyond 3000 watts

Because they carry such efficiencies in how they work, it is common now to find amps in our store that are four and five channel amps, each producing in excess of 100 watts per channel.

Installing an amp, or upgrading a factory amp is the single most notable change you can make to your system. However, we almost never recommend running a higher power amp with stock speakers. In almost all of our installs, the amplifier and speaker combination is recommended.

One of the most popular upgrades we sell these days is adding an amplifier and a subwoofer to an existing system. In almost all cases, if you want to retain the factory head unit, we offer wire harness kits that are plug and play with your factory head unit. The speaker leads are removed from the factory head unit, and plugged into the amplifier, and then a harness is used to plug the amplifier into the headunit. This upgrade has a tremendous effect on the sound level and quality.

So come on into the store and shoot the class D amp talk with us. We literally can hook you up to anything.
