The bill has in fact PASSED the legislative process. The change will take effect July 1, 2026, as that’s when the new law will be in force! Are you wondering how this new law will work for kids in process or waiting for their 90-day mark? Well, the GOOD NEWS is that once a driver is 16 and have passed driver’s education, they can get their license as early as July 1st 😊
KEY POINTS FOR TEENS:
If you complete an approved driver’s education program, you could be eligible at 16 instead of 16 years and 90 days.
Without driver’s education, the waiting period remains 16 years and 270 days.
You’ll still need to pass vision and knowledge tests, and complete supervised driving practice.
If you are 16 years old AND passed driver’s education you can get your license on July 1st, 2026.
BOTTOM LINE:
As of July 1, 2026, Indiana will allow 16-year-olds with driver’s education to get a license!
