I got a call last night from a customer who had been using one of the "big name" remote tuning guys with some struggles on a cammed and supercharged 2019 Silverado (GM Global B software) using HP Tuners.
I know a lot of people like to pretend that Global B is some huge mystery. But the fact is that it's still a consistently physics-based operating system. It's just unforgiving of some of the shortcuts TOONERS used to use (like "MAF only" tunes). Getting the background VE model right is an absolute requirement. This means steady state logging and updating through the HPT Neural Network trainer. It works, I've done it plenty with clients.
Back to the issue at hand, customer states "It goes WOT at 51% pedal input, but it stays lean." Yep, that checks out. GM set up their naturally aspirated engines to saturate the throttle to reduce pumping losses, but they also need to worry about fuel economy and emissions. These engines are just fine at stoich with the blade open in stock form, so they can delay adding WOT fuel until they decide the driver really wants it. (Common practice across the industry now, actually.)
Enter the change in Power Enrichment qualifier - GM moved it from throttle position --> PEDAL position. So even if your driver demand map is driving a WOT condition, fueling may not switch over to PE until you satisfy the PEDAL trigger seen here. It's easy to miss, but important.
Incidentally, I had offered to host a quick ZOOM meeting to look over the calibration and log files with his tuner. But tuner ego got in the way of science and customer satisfaction. "Absolutely not. I do not share my work or anything."
This probably could have been a quick fix, even if it was a different root cause than the pedal trigger. Unfortunately, the customer suffers here. Nothing I do here is outside the bounds of what you have access to with the same software. I don't even lock the files I send people because it's just following the normal procedure.
I have quietly worked behind the scenes with some of the biggest names in the industry. Even at my level, I'm still committed to learning. My general experience there is that the best guys are also the best collaborators, and the guy who refuses to openly share his data is usually hiding behind some insecurity. Don't be that guy.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
..And yes, we would be happy to schedule a short private meeting to go over your project. Just reach out via email.
