I get asked all the time. "Why is tow or roadside assistance so expensive?"
Your answer:
- It is not benificial for a tow truck, wrecker, or a roll back to provide roadside services. *Flats, tire changes, lockouts, jumps starts, fuel deliveries*.. the key four is what we call it in this industry. Unless you're very close by for a tow truck (WE ARE TRACKED VIA OUR CELL PHONES). Between the commercial insurance, general liabilty insurance, on-hook, garage keepers, fuel, maintenance, permits, ect... We won't roll our trucks for pennies.
- Playing "Frogger" is a extremely dangerous game, roll of the dice to, help you. Especially on the side of the interstate. *I've had a few near misses*.. I tell my customers "stand over there or remain in the vehicle depending on the situation, or if you hear rumble strips.... RUN, that 80 mph car don't care about you or me".
- We run our service vehicles hard. To help you. Frankly... I run so much, I'm doing an oil change just about every 3 weeks at 5,000 miles intervals on full synthetic. Not including transmission, differential, cooling systems, ect maintenance. My service truck in these pics. It's a 2009 Silverado, bought last year at 90k miles. It's turning 182k miles now. My last call, the wheel bearing smoked out. Give me an hour, Harold (My truck name) will be ready to go.
- With all the above said and alot of people don't know this. It don't matter if a tow or roadside company. If you have a roadside policy. Simply Google or Facebook search "Towing or Roadside near me". Get whoever's invoice with pictures, services provided, year make & model with VIN, and you as payee on the invoice. You're eligible for reimbursement depending on your roadside policy.

I felt bad for this couple with a little girl road tripping from Connecticut. US Rt. 50 outside of Bainbridge, Ohio 2019 Nissan Versa. I was deadheading back from Chillicothe, Ohio and ran up on this vehicle at a bottom of a valley, alongside a guardrail on a bridge. The pictures don't do justice, you pop up over a hill and they're there. You're either swerving around them, or braking hard if oncoming traffic is there. Bad bad bad spot. I initially passed them and turned around, offered assistance. The couple was on the phone with their roadside agent with ETA of 2 hours. Since I was passing through, I didn't charge my rate, simply asked what was fair to them, I invoiced via text, they enter their cc (I don't need to see the cc) and pay. Informed them to turn my invoice reciept into their provider for reimbursement. From what I was told, the day before they blew a tire on one of the rears. Towed to a shop had new tires installed. Welp now picked up a what looked to me a piece of plastic debris that punctured this tire. Apparently the husband went to change the flat, buuuuut there was no handles for the scissors jack. Since I am required to apply state tax, I actually wrote the invoice up $10 dollars less than what the couple offered at first. I know money tight with everybody, really it only took me 6 or 7 minutes getting rain soaked to get them back on the road.

Ooof, Dispatch didn't relay this to me or either the CX didn't tell dispatch. About 20ish or so miles North of Chillicothe, Ohio, NBOH-104 yesterday evening. 2016 Toyota Avalon Hybrid. On scene 1958, completed 2029. Back story was that the CX attempted to change his flat, not realizing that the footing for his scissors jack is gravel on sand. His scissors jack became on stable, the vehicle rolled forward and then dropped to the ground. He's lucky he didn't get injured, and caused minimum damage to the vehicle being soft footing. Only scuff marks to lower lip of front right bumber cover, bent caliper dust shield (had to straighten out, it folded under the lower control arm.. actually protected it). After digging rocks out of the rotor vents, and a good look over of the underside and chassis. I was confident enough to deem good to go, but advised to have a shop do an inspection when he gets his flat replaced.

-Providing roadside assistance, or towing is extremely dangerous industry roadside. We are here to help you, do what we can at the best of our ability to get you back on the road while nose to nose with the reaper by each passing vehicle. Please if you see those strobes, slow down and move over, if you can't... at least slow down.

***Today***
While changing a flat for a lady... No joke I had a semi-trailer brush my back. My high res-vest has the scuff marks, all I hear from the CX (customer / stranded motorist) *standing off to the side off the roadway* screaming "Are you ok! Are you ok!"

Me: (collecting my thoughts) Stood up, walked next to her. "Give me a couple minutes please." Gave her a cigarette, I smoked 3 in about five minutes collecting my bearings sitting on that hillside.

Enough of that... please move over and slow down.

In these frigid temps, visual check your vehicle's batteries. The cold weather reak havoc on them. Corrosion, bulging, case cracking, age, ect. The average lifespan of a brand name battery is about 5 years. Yes Pruis's need jumped too, but not realy in a jump start traditional way. The 2019 blue Sonic had the orginal battery. The initial contact with the CX was of steam coming from the battery. Never had issues with the vehicle. Popped the hood, seen corrosion. *I didn't bother to jump incase of explosion from the battery*. Yes, car batteries can explode... It's not a good time. The black Jeep, 4 year old battery, I'm the second to jump start it the same day. I offer battery replacements, several ways to work with you. Additionally will test the battery itself, the cranking system, and also the charging system. My priority is getting you back on the road as quickly/efficiently and safely as possible.

Coming soon! Ability to service lockouts for Tesla models S, 3, X, & Y! I've been searching for this tool that didn't cost an arm and leg for a few weeks due to being out of stock (I have turned a few calls down due to I wasn't risking busting a window). My tool will be here within a week.

"The Tesla tool is a specialty long reach tool designed specifically for the effective opening of Tesla model vehicles. Tesla models can be tricky, particularly with respect to their use of thin laminated glass on the front two windows of the vehicle, rather than the more traditionally used tempered glass. Sandwiching the Tesla tool between two Wonder Shields helps to protect the tool from contacting the window glass, preventing damage, or worse; the glass exploding. In a situation where the vehicle is without power, the electronic locks fitted on a Tesla will not function properly.
The manual door release lever in front of the window switches on the door pane can be manipulated to open the vehicle. This release lever can be difficult to access with traditional long reach tools due to the shape of the lever, the direction and angle that it needs to be manipulated, and the tightness of the frameless window through which the tool needs to pass."
