It's Gate Safety month! Let's chat about entrapment protection...
Automated gates create movement, which can create potential hazards wherever a person could become trapped between moving and stationary components. A gate can operate exactly as intended and still present a safety hazard if entrapment protection isn't properly addressed.
UL 325 includes requirements for entrapment protection, and identifies potential entrapment zones. This is highly important to consider during gate installation. Depending on the application, protection may include:
- Photoelectric sensors that detect an obstruction without requiring physical contact.
- Contact sensing edges that detect pressure when an obstruction is encountered.
- Proper gate construction and clearances that help address or eliminate potential hazards throughout the gate's movement.
No single safety device is a substitute for evaluating the entire installation!
At AutoGate, we believe understanding how these components work together is essential to creating safer, more reliable automated entrances.
