FINANCING vs. CASH: Which one is better?

Buying a truck with cash - rather than securing financing - sounds smart, but determining if that is the best solution for you is not quite as simple. Choosing between cash or financing should be based on your long-term business goals; not merely on whether you have available cash in the bank. PACCAR Financial has identified compelling benefits for financing that you should consider before you decide which option is best for you.

Expanded Options

When you finance your truck purchase, you are keeping your options open. Growing your business takes cash; and business opportunities sometimes present themselves unexpectedly. Having available cash puts you in a position to benefit when opportunity arises, so why tie up your cash in equipment purchases?

More Flexibility

When you finance your truck to maintain a cash cushion, you remain flexible and better prepared to cope with unforeseen circumstances. Fuel prices, competition, economic factors and labor costs are just some of the issues facing the trucking industry on a daily basis.

Accommodating Terms

When you choose to finance, you are allowing yourself to take advantage of the variety of options available - each with differentiating benefits in order to best suit your needs. At PACCAR Financial, we offier different loan types including such options as variable-rate or fixed-rate loans, balloon payments or seasonal payments. Some of our lease options include TRAC, modified TRAC or FMV.

Better Credit Rating

Securing financing for your truck purchase is a good way to build or improve your business credit rating. A good credit rating provides a strong foundation for your business, which means you’ll have another level of security during all types of business climates.

At PACCAR Financial, we offer flexible financing options to fit your individual circumstances. For more information on how PACCAR Financial can customize a finance solution for you, please call one of our Used Truck Centers. 801-975-0602

Simple Solutions to Increase Fuel Economy and Save Money On the Road

The ongoing battle for better fuel efficiency has been a staple of the trucking industry for a number of years. However, with the advancements in technology, and aerodynamics of trucks, the industry as a whole has seen significant changes and improvements over the last decade.

Overall, MPG is mainly about the driver, but here are a some components that can be implemented into a daily driving routine that will help reduce fuel consumption, increase fuel economy, and save money.

Tips and Techniques to Make a Gallon Go Further_________________

Take Advantage Of the Cruise Control Option

Using cruise control while driving keeps the truck moving at a steady pace, with little to no work from the driver. Less acceleration allows for more fuel to be conserved.

Avoid Unnecessary Speeds and Acceleration

Multiple rapid accelerations can lower fuel economy dramatically. As a general rule of thumb, for every 1 MPH that speed is increased, it can decrease fuel economy by about 0.1MPG.

Block Shifting

In short, block shifting is utilizing the trucks RPM’s while driving to skip gears in order to get to the higher coasting or highway gears. For example, going from 2nd gear to 5th, skipping the gears in between.

Reduce the Overall Weight

Reducing the overall weight of the truck and load can decrease fuel consumption tremendously. This can be done with the truck and trailer by choosing options such as lightweight parts. According to SmartWay, reducing 3,000 lbs. from a truck can save anywhere from 200-500 gallons of fuel a year.

Reduce Engine Idling Time

Avoid unnecessary engine idling where possible; an idling engine can burn almost 1 gallon of fuel an hour. Consistently idling an engine can have other consequences as well. Such as, increase engine maintenance costs, while simultaneously shortening engine life. Plus fumes, and harmful emissions can pose a serious health hazard.

Opting for More Fuel Efficient Equipment

While certain trucks have more aerodynamic features than others, there are still a number of options that can be considered apart from the cab. Using single wide-base tires and rims are lighter than two standard tires and rims. Total weight saving on average for a typical combination truck using single wide-base tires on its drive and trailer axles range from

800-1,000 lbs which can reduce fuel consumption or increase cargo capacity. Other options for equipment include, roof fairings, cab extenders, side fairings, and front bumber air dams. With features like these, it can improve the overall fuel economy by up to 15%, and save a typical combination truck an average of 2,400 gallons of fuel a year.

If you’re looking for a premium used truck with some of the fuel saving options listed above already installed, please contact a PACCAR Financial Used Truck Center and speak with one of our experienced sales representatives.

How to avoid buying a Class 8 Lemon

Class 8 trucks are expense to purchase, expensive to operate, and expensive to repair. Truck repair can be the most unpredictable element of keeping your business running. So the difference between making a steady profit and taking a debilitating loss in trucking, could be whether your truck spends a lot of time in the shop. Not only does it cost you labor and materials, but extended loss of revenue is a business killer. Avoid it if you can, here's how.

1. Purchase from a reputable dealer – If you buy from a reputable dealer, they are trying to maintain a good reputation in the industry. If they find a problem they will fix it or cancel the deal (we have several times) rather than pass it on. I would rather find a bad engine than let it get out of my control. When you sell thousands of trucks each year, you can afford to do the right thing. If you only sell 5 or 10 trucks a year, taking a hit on a bad engine could put you out of business, so…… Check google reviews or ask friends. Bad news travels fast, but so does good news.

2. Bring a mechanic to check out your truck! Modern trucks are complicated. Properly checking out a truck could be the difference between getting a great deal and buying a problem. Expecting yourself to be an expert (unless you are an expert) is like trying giving yourself an appendectomy. Possible, but the outcome is not likely to be good.

3. While reviewing the truck, make a checklist of anything that you want reviewed, or any problems that you see. If purchasing from a distance, send your checklist to the dealer and ask for a report. We typically do a 151 point inspection, so if you care about point 214, clearly we would miss it. We will follow any checklist you provide and give you the report, we will also give you all the service records we have.

4. Check everything out before you leave. Start at the front and do a full safety inspection. Check all the features and notify the seller of anything that doesn’t work. We are happy to work with our customers after the sale, but there is no substitute for seeing the problem and fixing before you purchase the truck. Making repairs in house is always faster and cheaper than at a dealer in Anywhere, USA.

5. Truckers don’t plan to fail, but some do fail to plan! – Accept that all trucks are going to break sometimes. Statistically, trucks are very reliable, but planning for $500 a month or $0.05 a mile in maintenance will give you the resources you need when things break.

PACCAR Transmission Added for T880

The PACCAR 12-speed automated transmission will become available on the Kenworth T880 beginning in January 2020. The transmission will incorporate new PACCAR MX engine-optimized performance calibrations that support light vocational applications, including construction, refuse, agriculture and some mining. Designed for applications up to 110,000 pounds GVW, the expanded PACCAR transmission availability is intended for Kenworth T880s that travel mainly on paved roads and occasionally operate off highway on maintained dirt or gravel roads. The PACCAR transmission’s new performance calibrations will provide higher full throttle upshift points to enhance overall performance and acceleration, and higher power downshift points to prevent speed loss on grades and higher resistance surfaces. Faster, more aggressive ramp rates and quicker shifts on grades will improve acceleration. The transmission also offers faster full-throttle launches with quicker, more aggressive clutch engagement. The transmission is available with the PACCAR MX-13 engine rated up to 510 hp and 1,850 lb-ft of torque, and the PACCAR MX-11 engine rated up to 430 hp and 1,650 lb-ft of torque.

If you have never driven an automated transmission, stop by and take one for a drive. It is a new experience.

The Role of Fuel Economy in Trucking.

If you are an owner operator or Fleet manager you are very familiar with the cost of doing business in the trucking industry. There are costs you can control and costs you can’t control; knowing the difference is the key to being successful in this business.

The leading cost you can control is fuel. The Average truck on the road today is getting 5-6 MPG loaded with 40,000 lbs. However with the right truck and the right driving patterns, you can increase that to 8.5MPG. For your standard owner operator driving 10,000 miles a month, that would reduce fuel cost by $2882 per month ($34,588 per year).

1. Smaller Engines – just like in your car, a smaller engine uses less fuel per mile. The DD-12 or the MX-13 both get proportionally better fuel economy (about 12% better) than the Cummins ISX or DD-15 engines. But due to the increased compression capability and improved fuels systems, the standard MX-13 is capable of the same Horsepower and torque output as the Standard ISX-15.

2. Shift sooner – Modern diesel engines are designed for high torque output at lower RPM’s. The Cummins ISX achieves Max Torque at 1450 RPM, the current MX-13 achieves max torque at 1100 RPM. Winding the engine above these shift points is wasted fuel. Using an automated transmission allows the computer to optimize these shift points and never over rev the engine. The Result is typically a 10-15% improvement in fuel economy.

3. Aerodynamics – The modern trucking fleets have been shaped to allow the air to glide around them. The Peterbilt 579 is best in class for Aerodynamics. Therefore, a 2016 Peterbilt 579 with a MX-13 and Automated Transmission should be getting 9 MPG under standard conditions.

4. Slow Down – “Speed is always a question of money, how fast can you afford to go.” The force of wind resistance is exponentially based on speed. Sustaining 120 MPH takes 4-6 times more power than 60MPH. Governing yourself to a reasonable speed (70-75MPH) will be the biggest factor in your fuel economy quest.
