In the year 2000 car manufacturers started switching to Soy based wiring insulations. Prior to that, oil and petroleum-based insulations were in use. This was done to help environmental-friendly driving that comes with soy-based products. It is up for debate that this has caused an increase in rodent damage to the wiring systems in vehicles. Upon research it hasn’t been proven and cases were dropped stating there wasn’t enough evidence to support it.

Rodents are know to find warm shelter during cold months and will chew thru anything to get there and have been a problem for ages, but some say with this new Soy-based, it gives them a yummy food option with the warmth.

If you’ve experienced or want to prevent, There are a few solutions online recommending to help eliminate a visit from our rodent friends:
Peppermint Oil, Pine-Sol, Red Pepper, Irish spring are some natural ways. It is recommended to make a solution and spray the areas liberally and often to keep the rodents away. (You can find more details online of how much and how often)

It is hard to say which vehicles are being made with them or if the Soy-based is part of the rise in damage being seen, but you can research your vehicle to find out online and learn more about this!
