What Would You Rate These Cabin Air Filters?

At J&S Automotive, we believe good service starts with clear communication. We don’t simply tell you that something is “dirty,” “leaking” or “needs attention.” Whenever possible, we inspect it, photograph it and rate its condition so you understand how serious it actually is.

We use a simple 1–10 rating scale for cabin air filters and other concerns we notice during an inspection, including fluid leaks, worn components and maintenance items:

1–2: Okay condition
3–5: Starting to deteriorate—monitor it or plan for service
6–8: Poor condition—service or replacement recommended
9–10: Severe condition—address as soon as possible

If an item isn’t placed on the rating scale, it means it is in good condition and doesn’t require attention.

For example, a light oil seep may receive a lower rating and simply need to be monitored. An active leak that is losing fluid or could cause additional damage would receive a higher rating and a stronger recommendation.

The cabin air filters shown here are solid 9s and 10s. They are packed with dirt, leaves and other debris. Some also show signs of possible rodent activity.

A restricted cabin air filter can reduce airflow from the vents, contribute to unpleasant odors and allow more dust and debris into the vehicle’s heating and air-conditioning system.

Our goal is to give you clear information—not pressure. We document what we find, explain its condition and help you understand what needs immediate attention, what can be planned for later and what is currently okay.

When was the last time your cabin air filter was checked?

Asian and Domestic Auto Repair

This 2011 Toyota Tundra came into J&S Automotive with an engine-oil leak from the cam towers—a common and labor-intensive repair on Toyota’s V8 engines.

Correcting this leak requires removing several major components from the top of the engine, carefully lifting the cam towers, thoroughly cleaning the sealing surfaces, and applying new sealant in the proper locations. Everything is then carefully reassembled and inspected to ensure the repair is sealed correctly.

This video gives you a look at the amount of disassembly and attention to detail involved in performing a proper cam-tower reseal. It’s a big job, but doing it correctly helps keep oil off the engine, exhaust components, and your garage floor.

If you notice a burning-oil smell, oil around the sides of your engine, or spots underneath your Toyota or Lexus, give us a call to have it inspected.

Not every transmission service is as simple as removing a drain plug.

Many modern automatic transmissions require the transmission pan to be removed so the filter can be replaced and the inside of the transmission can be inspected.

Skipping the filter replacement or using the wrong fluid can shorten the life of an otherwise healthy transmission.

Whether your vehicle spends its time commuting, towing, or exploring the trails, keeping up with transmission maintenance is one of the best ways to protect your investment.

From Jeeps and 4x4s to trucks, SUVs, and daily drivers, we service a wide variety of domestic and Asian vehicles right here at J & S Automotive. If your adventure takes you off the pavement, make sure your vehicle is ready to get you there—and back.

Timing Chain Issue Found Before Major Engine Damage...

This vehicle came into the shop with drivability concerns, and during our inspection we found the timing chain had stretched and was beginning to slip.

A worn or stretched timing chain can cause engine timing to fall out of sync, leading to rough running, loss of power, check engine lights, and in some cases serious internal engine damage if left unaddressed.

Fortunately, we caught this one early before it turned into a much bigger repair.

Timing chains are often considered long-life components, but oil maintenance, wear over time, and mileage all play a big role in their lifespan.

Some common signs of timing chain wear include:

• Rattling noise on startup
• Rough idle
• Loss of power
• Check engine light
• Cam/crank correlation fault codes

Catching problems early can save thousands in repairs and help keep your vehicle reliable.

At J & S Automotive, we believe in thorough inspections and accurate diagnosis so our customers can make informed decisions about their repairs.

Serving Aloha, Beaverton, and Hillsboro and surrounding areas. Give us a call if your vehicle is showing signs of engine timing issues.

These photos are from two different catalytic converter repairs we recently completed.

In the first photo, you can see an oxygen (O₂) sensor that had become seized in the catalytic converter. Over time, rust, corrosion, and years of service can make O₂ sensors difficult to remove, sometimes requiring replacement.

The second photo shows the internal catalyst material from a different catalytic converter that had broken apart inside the exhaust system.

Common symptoms of a failing catalytic converter:

• Check Engine Light
• Loss of Power
• Poor Fuel Economy
• Rattling Noise from the Exhaust
• Failed Emissions Testing

Common causes of catalytic converter failure:

• Engine Misfires
• Excessive Oil Consumption
• Coolant Contamination
• Physical Damage
• Age and High Mileage

Many people don't realize that a catalytic converter is often the victim of another problem. Replacing the converter without addressing the root cause can lead to premature failure of the new unit.

If your vehicle has a catalyst efficiency code, an exhaust rattle, or a Check Engine Light, proper diagnosis is the first step.

We recently resealed a leaking engine timing cover and boy was it a big job. Full open heart surgery on the vehicle. On this kind of job, you get to see almost all the working components. The way an engine works is quite an amazing spectacle... Props to our technician's for being able to perform a mechanical feat such as this!

Electrical diagnosis can sometimes be one of the most difficult and time-consuming parts of repairing modern vehicles. What may seem like a simple issue can turn into hours of researching wiring diagrams, tracing circuits, accessing hidden components, and performing detailed testing to find the true cause of the problem.

This vehicle came in with an electrical issue that wasn’t obvious at all. After extensive testing and carefully reviewing wiring diagrams, we traced the problem to a damaged connector and wiring hidden underneath the passenger-side floorboard carpet. The wiring was buried under insulation and wrapped in electrical tape, making it extremely difficult to locate. Over time, the connection corroded internally, causing an open circuit

This is also a good example of why shops charge diagnostic labor. In many cases, the repair itself may only take a short amount of time once the issue is found — but locating the problem can require several hours of skilled testing and experience from a technician. Modern vehicles have extremely complex electrical systems, and properly diagnosing them often takes far more time than simply replacing a part.

Sometimes the issue isn’t a failed component you can immediately see — it’s a hidden problem that takes patience, knowledge, and persistence to uncover correctly.

ANTS!!! Yeup, you heard it right. We had a vehicle come in with a constant electrical draw that was draining the battery and leaving it dead every morning. We spent some time testing different electrical components and then a heat map of the car and saw the amplifier was red hot in certain areas... Low and behold ANTS were found short-circuiting the system and had fried it! Sometimes you never know what your going to run into with diagnosing a car!
