There are approximately 3,000 to 5,400 operational data centers in the U.S
There is no single official database tracking every approved data center. However, industry and climate research indicates that about $400 billion in planned infrastructure is delayed. Out of the roughly 90 gigawatts (GW) of capacity currently planned, about 36% is permitted but has not yet started construction
Daily electricity usage for a data center varies drastically depending on its size, function, and workload. An average medium-to-large facility consumes between (1) and (100 megawatts (MW) continuously, which translates to (24,000) to (2,400,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh)
To put this in perspective:
Large Hyperscale Center Uses ( approx 1,200,000 kWh ) daily. This is roughly the same amount of electricity as (40,000) U.S. homes.
The global data center market is experiencing massive, accelerating growthāprojected to exceed $300 billion in yearly revenue and tracking toward roughly $570 billion to $736.9 billion in the coming years, largely driven by cloud computing, edge computing, and skyrocketing AI infrastructure...
