Hello, September! 🍂☕

There is something undeniably magical about the transition from late summer to early fall here in the San Juan Mountains.

The afternoons are still perfectly warm and sunny for lake adventures, but our mornings and evenings are finally bringing that crisp, refreshing mountain chill that makes you want to break out your favorite flannel.

Locals often call September our "secret season." The peak summer crowds begin to thin out, the trails get incredibly peaceful, and the trees are just starting to think about putting on their autumn colors.

It is the absolute best time for a quiet, unhurried getaway.

Ready to trade the AC for a fresh mountain breeze and a crackling campfire? Reserve your site and experience the best of both seasons.

Slower Wi‑Fi, faster sunsets. In our pine‑filled mountain valley near Vallecito Lake, cell bars fade—but connection doesn’t

We built an on‑property system so you can stay in touch when you need to: free basic Wi‑Fi across the resort, dedicated routers in every cabin, and designated hotspots for RVers. Need extra bandwidth for a call or upload? Optional SkyWeb upgrade is available.

Reality check: signals travel through tall pines and rugged terrain, so speeds are slower and less consistent than in town. Pro tip: enable Wi‑Fi Calling before you arrive and download maps/playlists ahead of time. When you can, unplug and let the San Juan National Forest set the pace.

Bayfield once turned winter into summer’s cold: 200‑lb ice blocks cut from frozen ponds kept July meals chilled long before freezers existed.

Before mechanical refrigeration, crews scored grids across pond ice with horse‑drawn plows, then sawed and slid the blocks through channels to shore. Stacked in thick‑walled wooden icehouses and packed with sawdust or hay, January’s harvest stayed solid for months—powering homes, shops, and hotel kitchens when fields were quiet and cash was scarce.

In mountain towns like ours, consistent deep freezes made ponds valuable “winter reservoirs” that fueled a seasonal economy—and left behind stories of grit you can still feel on crisp, bluebird days near Vallecito Lake.

Save this post as your reminder to explore Bayfield’s frozen‑in‑time traditions during your stay at Junction West Vallecito Resort.

On your way to Bayfield, do you choose the fastest route—or the long way with lake-and-pine views?

Quick arrival: stick to main highways, fuel up in town, and check road updates before you roll.
Scenic wander: if you’ve got time, cruise County Road 501 toward Vallecito Lake for sparkling water views and photo pullouts—add buffer time and watch for wildlife at dawn/dusk.

Mountain nights are breathtaking—and deceiving. In the San Juan National Forest, edges can vanish into the dark. Pack a headlamp and a few reflective cones so you can enjoy the stars and stay safe.

Why it matters: Half of U.S. traffic deaths happen at night even though only a quarter of miles are driven. Low light flattens depth and color, so gravel, pavement, and drop-offs can look like one surface. Reflective markers pop from 1,000+ ft when hit by headlights.

Headlamp checklist: 250–400 lumens, spot + flood, red mode (preserves night vision), IPX4+ water rating, tilt hinge, lock-out, USB-C recharge, reflective strap.

Cone basics: Collapsible reflective cones live small and deploy fast. Highway pattern = 10 ft, 100 ft (offset 10 ft toward traffic), and 200 ft behind your vehicle. On narrow forest roads: one in front, one behind, one at the road edge.

Pro tips: Keep cones in the driver-side rear door so you don’t step into traffic. Clip your headlamp onto a cone for an instant lantern. In the cold, keep the lamp inside your coat to save battery. Wrap reflective tape on your jack and lug wrench. Mark tent guylines to prevent 2 a.m. stumbles.

Late arrival at Vallecito Lake? Sweep the shoulder with your headlamp, drop a cone at that sneaky edge, then settle into the crisp mountain quiet with confidence.
