Getting stuck is half the fun, but getting out is where the real skill shines.
Today’s off-road recovery class at Searchers 4WD Supply & Outfitters was the perfect mix of beautiful weather, great community, and crucial trail knowledge. With a fantastic crowd gathered outside the shop—some kicking back in folding lawn chairs, others standing by and soaking in every word—the atmosphere was laid-back but highly focused.
The spotlight today was on doing things the safe and effective way. Phil broke down the critical mechanics of proper winch usage, demonstrating the setup step-by-step right off the front bumper of a fully kitted Jeep Rubicon. It was incredibly helpful to see the exact rigging angles and safety checks explained in real-time. We also got a deep dive into the essential recovery gear laid out on the display table, talking through the practical applications of heavy-duty straps, shackles, and the trusty trail shovels you never want to leave home without.
There is a massive difference between just buying recovery gear and actually knowing how to deploy it safely when you are axle-deep in mud on a precarious incline. Whether you are a seasoned trail veteran brushing up on complex rigging techniques or a newcomer figuring out how to unspool a line for the very first time, classes like this build the confidence needed to push further off the grid.
There is nothing quite like spending a few hours learning alongside a community of fellow 4x4 enthusiasts who just want to keep the adventure moving safely forward.
