Another successful yacht delivery completed by Atlantic Yacht Delivery — this time aboard a beautiful 43-foot Egg Harbor Sport Fisherman from Jupiter, Florida, north to Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City, New Jersey.
This was initially planned as a four-day East Coast yacht delivery. Despite changing weather conditions, a significant offshore diversion, and heavier-than-forecast seas, we completed the trip safely in just five days.
The delivery gave us a little bit of everything: fair seas, offshore running, Intracoastal Waterway cruising, changing conditions, and a few challenging stretches that demonstrated exactly what this classic Egg Harbor was built to handle.
After departing Jupiter and working our way north, we planned an offshore run from Fernandina Beach, Florida, toward the Carolinas. The marine weather apps were consistently calling for manageable 3- to 4-foot seas. Approximately 35 to 40 miles offshore, however, conditions began building rapidly. The forecasted 3- to 4-foot seas quickly became 6 to 8 feet and then developed into legitimate 8- to 10-foot seas.
The Egg Harbor Sport Fisherman, powered by twin Caterpillar C12 diesel engines, handled the rough offshore conditions like a champ. She proved to be an exceptionally capable, well-built vessel, cutting through the heavier seas admirably and performing better than some newer million-dollar yachts I have run.
As the seas continued building, we made the prudent decision to alter the route rather than force an offshore run in deteriorating conditions. We redirected into Charleston, South Carolina, and continued north through a combination of safer inshore and Intracoastal Waterway routes.
The weather around Cape Hatteras also required careful planning and route adjustments, but the diversion and foul weather added only one day to the original delivery schedule.
Our route included stops in Charleston, South Carolina; Georgetown, South Carolina; Southport, North Carolina; Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina; Beaufort, North Carolina; Coinjock, North Carolina; and Lynnhaven in Virginia Beach, before completing the delivery at Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City.
For a 2003 Egg Harbor, she was an impressive vessel inside and out. With her twin Cat C12s, we found a comfortable cruising speed of approximately 27 to 28 knots during the favorable portions of the trip.
The owner was aboard for the delivery and made an excellent second hand throughout the journey. He hung tough through the rough offshore conditions, remained helpful during the changing route decisions, and was a pleasure to have aboard.
After the handoff at Liberty Landing, the owner planned to complete the final leg of the voyage up the Hudson River and onward to the boat’s new home on Lake Champlain.
A great trip, a capable owner, and a classic American-built sportfishing yacht that earned a tremendous amount of respect along the way.
