Just days after a spike in freight volumes that had some businesses hoping that the post COVID-19 rebound had already begun, the freight volume in the spot market took a hard plunge. Not only that, but nationwide outbound freight volumes are down as well. And experts are warning that they may have much further to fall.

Freight volumes and rates have been incredibly volatile since the end of February. But by the end of March, monthly averages were actually looking pretty good in some segments of the industry. Since then though, things have taken a turn.

According to DAT Solutions, truckload freight volumes dropped significantly last week. The available spot loads in their DAT load board network – the largest in the industry – dropped by 39%. Not only that, but national rates per mile have fallen off of their March averages. Despite seeing a significant spike last month, even re**er rates are down.

For some owner-operators, the future is looking uncertain.

“I am basically shut down,” Independent O-O Timothy Barrett told Overdrive. “I can go broke two ways: Hauling for nothing or not hauling. I’m not going to [run loads] and exchange money for fuel and drive the truck for free.”

He normally hauls automotive parts and loads for concerts and live events, but both sectors have been hit hard by COVID-19 closures. Now he’s had to take a part-time job at Walmart to make ends meet.

It’s not just O-Os who are facing tough times ahead. The ATA has warned that even large carriers will likely have to lay off workers as freight volume declines.

“Uncertainty is skyrocketing. Forecasting is difficult enough to begin with, let alone when we’re in unprecedented times,” ATA chief economist Bob Costello said according to Freightwaves. “One thing we do know, though, is we’re in a recession, the second quarter is going to be terrible.”
