I had the pleasure of seeing the tufted puffin outside the Edmonds breakwater again today. And this right after enjoying orcas to myself in the middle of the channel. There is something absolutely magical about this place. And inspiring. But there’s also a deep sense of worry in seeing a single puffin in the season when they should be with their mates.

Puffins mate for life. They spend the winter months traveling thousands of miles alone without their partner or anyone else. Most of these miles are not on the wing, but in the water, swimming, and hunting fish. In the spring, they come back to their traditional nesting grounds and find their mate to have a sweet little dance and get on with the process of bringing pufflings into the world.

We have lost our Salish puffin colonies. They are all gone. There are two pairs still returning to Smith Island but that’s all. And this one, lone Edmonds puffin.

I don’t like seeing Puget Sound disappearing in front of me and below me. It breaks my heart. But I also hold out hope for restoration. Through our efforts and our potential to get out of the way.

And it should be noted that the orcas had a very young individual with them. There is always hope.

Y’all know my fascination with bull-kelp. I feel so lucky to work with Kari Inch Sophie Schwager Lando Howlrissian and Brian, on the Puget Sound Restoration Fund dive team, in this big ol’ effort to conserve and restore Puget Sound bull kelp populations.

Sometimes the science requires a small harvest for lab analysis. And when there is a little bit of extra kelp in the harvest, it feels like the thing to do is make kelp pickles!

A decade of work to this point. From OUPV (6-PAK) to 50ton near coastal to here. I feel proud of it. I love the work. This is probably as far as I’ll go as far as my rating, but stoked to have gotten here. Many years of captaining boats to come! 🍾🥂
