Pennsylvania Turnpike and State Police Pulled Over 200+ Drivers for Skipping Tolls; Collected $48,000 in a Single Day, One Driver Owed More Than $100,000
MIDDLETOWN, PENNSYLVANIA — The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and Pennsylvania State Police conducted their first joint toll enforcement initiative in April, completing more than 200 traffic stops in a monthlong operation that resulted in over 90% of stopped drivers taking action to pay outstanding balances or come into compliance, including one driver who owed more than $100,000 in unpaid tolls.
The initiative targeted drivers with unpaid toll balances as well as aggressive driving behaviors. On the operation's single best day, 23 traffic stops were made, a record for the initiative, with more than $48,000 in unpaid tolls collected that day alone and the opportunity to recover more than $130,000 in past-due balances.
Drivers who accumulate $250 in unpaid tolls and fees, or four unpaid Toll By Plate invoices, are referred to PennDOT for registration suspension. Since 2018, more than 200,000 Eligible for Suspension letters have been issued to Pennsylvania-registered owners. More than 67,000 vehicles remain in active suspension status. Driving with a suspended registration can result in significant fines, driver's license suspension, and immediate vehicle impoundment. Impounded vehicles also accrue towing fees on top of existing balances.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike is also working with the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General to pursue civil action against the most egregious individual violators, those owing more than $12,000.
"As we refine and enhance future enforcement efforts, drivers who continue to ignore invoices will face consequences," said PA Turnpike CEO Mark Compton. "While the majority of our 550,000 daily customers follow the law and pay their tolls on time, we will continue to target evaders and make measurable progress on claiming what we're owed."
"The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission uses all tools available to enhance toll collections, with the understanding that meaningful results are often achieved through strong collaboration with law enforcement agencies," said PA Turnpike COO Craig Shuey.
The PA Turnpike and PSP plan to continue and refine future enforcement campaigns. Drivers can avoid fees and registration suspension by paying balances through E-ZPass, which saves up to 50% on tolls, or Toll By Plate at paturnpike. com.
