LONE STAR LE MANS WEEK AT COTA THIS WEEK

This is one of the biggest sports-car weeks of the year in Austin.

FIA WEC brings the Lone Star Le Mans to Circuit of The Americas September 4 through 6, culminating in a six-hour race on Sunday.

WEC brings two very different technical philosophies together.

LMGT3 takes production based GT platforms from some of the world's most recognizable performance manufacturers and turns them into endurance racers.

Six hours at COTA means traffic management, tire strategy, energy management, pit ex*****on, driver changes and reliability all matter.

Disney and Pixar's Cars returns to theaters beginning September 4 in celebration of its 20th anniversary.

Lightning McQueen represents the modern race car.

Doc Hudson connects the story to stock-car racing history.

Sally brings Porsche into Radiator Springs.

Mater represents the imperfect old vehicle with enough personality that nobody wants to replace it.

The movie also introduced an entire generation of kids to racing, Route 66 and the idea that a car could mean more than transportation.

AUGUST 1937: TOYOTA BECOMES AN INDEPENDENT AUTOMOBILE COMPANY

Toyota Motor Company was formally established in August of 1937, emerging from Toyoda Automatic Loom Works.

One of cars that is considered the most collectable Toyota is the 2000GT. Interestingly enough, it was Yamaha and Nissan/Datsun who actually started the creation of the model. Nissan abandoned the effort expecting this model not to be marketable.

Austin Texas trivia???? The TOYOTA of Austin dealership was located on 5th street and was victim to the 1981 Memorial Day floods. Water rushed over the banks of Shoal Creek and through many of the adjacent businesses, washing their contents into the creek and further downstream to Town Lake, now known as Lady Bird Lake.

The dealerships only 2000GT which was historically displayed on the showroom floor was lost forever to the rushing waters. Dive teams searched the lake and never found anything that could be identified as the 2000GT.

On August 27, 1957, automotive journalists gathered in Dearborn for the press introduction of Ford’s ambitious new Edsel division.

The launch included a dramatic stunt demonstration, followed by journalists driving Edsel Pacers home for evaluation.

The cars included interesting features such as warning lights for an engaged parking brake and overheating, available seat belts and the now-famous push-button automatic transmission selector positioned in the steering-wheel hub.

Yet the Edsel became one of automotive history’s most famous commercial failures.

Great engineering, massive investment and enormous publicity cannot guarantee that a product aligns with what customers actually want.

Ironically, surviving Edsels are now collectible precisely because of their unusual history.

For enthusiasts, the roadrunner character has an extraordinary automotive connection.

Plymouth licensed the cartoon name and imagery for the Plymouth Road Runner, introduced for 1968 as a relatively affordable performance car.

Plymouth even gave the car a distinctive "meep-meep" horn.

The recipe was wonderfully straightforward.

Big V8 power. Reduced frills. Memorable name. Attainable price.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SMALL CARS EVER BUILT MAKES ITS DEBUT

The original Mini debuted in August of 1959.

Alec Issigonis' solution to Europe's fuel concerns was technically ingenious.

Mount the engine transversely. Drive the front wheels. Push the wheels toward the corners. Devote as much of the vehicle's footprint as possible to passengers rather than mechanical hardware.

Then John Cooper discovered something else.

The same tiny dimensions and wheel-at-each-corner layout that made the Mini efficient also made it wonderfully entertaining to race.

The result was the Mini Cooper, giant-killing competition success and one of Britain's most recognizable automobiles.

13B TURBO ROTARY POWER. MIATA WEIGHT.

For Sale Now: $12,000.

This is what happens when one of the best lightweight sports-car chassis ever built gets the drivetrain Mazda enthusiasts always wondered about.

This **1996 Mazda Miata** was extensively re-engineered around a **turbocharged 1.3-liter 13B rotary engine and heavy-duty 5-speed manual transmission from a second-generation RX-7 Turbo II**. It was not simply an engine swap. The project required substantial fabrication to make two of Mazda's most celebrated performance platforms work together.

The Miata subframe was reworked to accept the 13B. The firewall was modified for drivetrain clearance. Custom rear transmission mounts were fabricated for the FC Turbo II gearbox, and additional bracing was created around the Miata differential.

The result combines the Miata's compact dimensions and lightweight chassis with the character of a turbocharged rotary drivetrain.

The chassis received equally serious attention:

• **Turbocharged 1.3L 13B rotary** from a Japanese-market 1989 RX-7 Turbo
• **RX-7 Turbo II heavy-duty 5-speed manual transmission**
• Modified Miata front subframe
• Modified firewall for 13B installation
• Custom transmission mounting
• Reinforced differential mounting
• **Flyin' Miata V-Maxx Classic Stage 2 suspension**
• Flyin' Miata sway bars
• NA8 Miata brakes with new pads, rotors and fluid
• **15x7 TR Motorsports C1 wheels**
• Hard Dog roll bar
• Aluminum racing seat with 5-point harness
• Custom aluminum instrument panel
• Full complement of VDO instrumentation
• Simplified lightweight Miata-based wiring harness
• Kill switch
• Sport exhaust

Even the electrical system was approached with weight and simplicity in mind. The original Miata harness was stripped down to the circuits actually required, producing a substantially lighter harness while maintaining an OEM-like installation.

It is equal parts **Miata, RX-7, engineering exercise and grassroots motorsports history.**
