FEATURED STUDENT: HENRY
Henry is the youngest student I have ever taught. I have always had a somewhat hard and fast rule that I do not begin students before the age of 3, due to their inability to make fine motor movements and other limiting factors. However, I met with Henry and Henry's mom, Merila, last September, when Henry was not quite 2 1/2, and found him to be gregarious, attentive, communicative (even though Mom had to translate!), and eager to participate in learning activities. So......I decided to take on the challenge!

And what a time we have had! Henry is coming up to the one year anniversary of his first lesson (he is now 3 years and 3 months old) and I marvel at every lesson how much he has learned and accomplished. His parents, John and Merila, work with him at home and are very much involved in his learning. Henry proves what Dr. Suzuki believed: that every child is born with an innate ability to create music, and that ability must be nurtured from a young age.

Please visit my "Photos" to see additional photos of Henry at his lessons. Enjoy!

Happy Saturday, everybody. I hope everyone is getting their back-to-school shopping done with a minimum of hassle, if that's possible!

I have FINALLY finished and had printed the 5"x7" card for promoting the studio. I am very pleased with it. I am planning to distribute it to schools and other places that provide services to families with children who may wish to enrich their lives through music education. Unfortunately, FB does not have a mechanism for uploading a .pdf, so I cannot display it here. :(

If anyone has any thoughts about a particular school or business that fits the profile, please let me know.

To those of you who have already offered to distribute them, just let me know how many you want and I will get them to you.

I am anxious to get the studio up to capacity and expand the studio community. This will be especially beneficial to students through expanded group lessons, field trips, theory classes, and just getting acquainted with other music-minded students.

I will be texting/emailing each of you regarding schedules, etc. Until then, have a great week-end!

Julie

Please remember that you are free to bring an interested friend to the group lesson. Just be sure to let me know so I have enough refreshments!

It seems unbelievable, but today is the last day of July and Summer break is almost over. For those of you who are still traveling, PLEASE bring back pix of your travels. And stories, too!

The studio's Fall term will officially begin September 1. Please let me know as soon as possible if your student's date/time needs to be changed from last term as I am starting to put schedules together. For now, I am assuming everyone is keeping to the same schedule as last term until I hear differently.

Group lessons will be the first Saturday morning of each month through December, with the exception of September, as the first Saturday in September is the beginning of Labor Day week-end (of course!). So ......... the September group lesson will be on Saturday, September 8. 11:00 a.m. seems to be a good time for everyone. As a reminder, I will post the sessions on the events calendar on this FB page.

I have discussed with some of you the possibility of my traveling to give lessons to students who find it difficult to travel to South Austin. I am still considering that possibility. At this point, it appears that it will depend on the studio schedule and whether or not I will have additional (new) students who are in need of that service. I would appreciate any input any of you might have.

All in all, the Summer Session has gone well. Sort of sorry to see it go - it's been fun! But I am definitely looking forward to Fall!

Well, Summer break is well under way and it seems everybody has settled into their new schedules, at least until they change again! To those of you who are traveling, be safe, and PLEASE bring back stories and pix of your travels to share!

It seems just about everyone will be taking lessons throughout the Summer. Good for you! As you know, we will be concentrating on repertoire and taking a break from theory and scale work. The focus will be on having fun making music. We will begin group lessons when school commences.

See you soon!

Happy Spring Break! If you are traveling, be safe, and I will see you when you get back.

FEATURED STUDENT: Laurel.

Laurel was the second student to join the studio since I arrived in Austin in 2016. And what an interesting journey we have taken in the last year and a half!

Laurel loves music and art, in general. (Check out her Love Art t-shirt in the new cover photo!) She is very creative with nail art, and this is one of her favorite things to do when she can fit it into her busy schedule. Laurel is a Girl Scout, and takes hula hoop lessons, among other activities.

Laurel has never had any difficulty with the "left hand vs. right hand" dilemma that 99% of students experience. This is an exceptional talent that has allowed her to play with her hands together almost from the beginning. She has mastered her major scales in the Circle of 5ths and is currently attacking the major scales in the Circle of 4ths, as well as the Hanon etudes. Her ear has developed beautifully, so we have begun to explore note reading. She is currently in Suzuki Book 1 and is tackling popular Disney movie songs which will eventually become duets. Laurel learned to play Holiday songs duet last year, not an easy accomplishment for a first year student!

Laurel has amazing support from her mom and dad, Meg and Tim.

Laurel attends Bee Cave elementary school where she is in the 5th grade.

FEATURED STUDENT: Jonah.

Jonah was the first student to join the studio since arriving in Austin in 2016. And what a fun time we have had!

Jonah loves music and is surrounded by a like-minded family. His grandfather is a performing musician, and both sets of grandparents have provided him with keyboards/pianos on which to practice while at their home(s). How's that for support!

Jonah's ear has developed very quickly and we are now immersed in music theory, in addition to Suzuki Book 1, scales and etudes.

Jonah attends Valley View elementary school where he participates in the gifted program. He also recently joined an after-school percussion class that meets twice a week, so now with his twice-a-week piano lessons, Jonah is all about music four days a week!

Bravo Jonah!

Hi, everybody! I'm back. Had to take a break while I was recovering from surgery.🎶

A big welcome to our new students, William, Jackie , and her mom, Sylvia.

William is 6 years old and attends Casis Elementary School in Central Austin. William was introduced to the piano last Summer and decided that he would like to take piano lessons. His favorite symphony is "Mars" from the Planets Suite by Gustav Holst. William is also a cub scout.

Jackie is 11 years old and attends The Waldorf School. Jackie has been taking Suzuki piano lessons since she was 3 years old and added Suzuki cello lessons to her busy schedule two years ago. Jackie also likes to knit, crochet, and sew.

Sylvia is taking lessons to better understand music and to help Jackie with her lessons. What a wonderful team I have to teach!
