GM started Dexos as a way around the law. The law states if you require a product to be used then it must be provided free of charge. GM isn’t going to give away oil so it made a Label called Dexos and requires you to use an oil with its specs. It then goes on to say you should use one that is approved. It isn’t required that you use one that is approved but they try to suggest that it is. Clearly GM is using language to trick you the customer to spend more money. How? GM owns Dexos. Dexos is the approved LOGO for use in the GM vehicles. Dexos then charges lubricant manufacturers a hefty fee to use the Dexos logo. The manufacturers must give up the formula to the oils giving Dexos and GM proprietary information that they couldn’t learn for themselves. Dexos then charges a 40 cents a gallon royalty to the manufacturers for the continued use of the logo. All making oil prices increase. Did you see that lubricants prices increased three times in 2018 alone?
Why do I say this? As an AMSOIL dealer earning my income for my family I view this as a direct attack to me. More importantly GM owners should see this as a direct attack at their wallet. GM wants you to pay more just for a logo. They can’t by law require you to buy their oil so they make a logo to require the approval from them so you still end up spending more. They don’t care if it comes from the GM dealer or the quick l**e down the street, they want a piece of everyone’s pie. How so? Because quick lines and mechanics now buy a Dexos approved oil but they don’t use it in just GM vehicles. So GM is making money off the logo for all manufacturers brands. This ladies and gentleman is a scam if I have ever seen one.
Please know that AMSOIL has the GM Dexos specs but NOT the logo. We decided that we don’t want our customers to pay more to GM and we especially don’t want GM to profit from our proprietary information. Know that your vehicle is protected by AMSOIL, the first synthetic lubricants ever to be sold to the public for automotive use and that still holds the line in the best products.
