🔧 Ask the Mechanic: "The dealer said I need a transmission service — but is it really necessary?"
We hear this one a lot. Here's our honest take:
For most European vehicles, transmission fluid is a "lifetime fluid" according to the manufacturer — but that lifetime is the transmission's, not the car's. What that actually means: the fluid is designed to last as long as the transmission itself before it fails. That's not the same as "you never need to change it."
In real-world driving conditions (stop-and-go traffic, occasional towing, spirited driving), transmission fluid breaks down and loses its protective properties over time. For most BMW, Mercedes, and Audi automatics, we recommend a fluid exchange every 40,000–60,000 miles.
The cost of a transmission service: typically $150–$300.
The cost of a rebuilt transmission: $3,000–$6,000+.
Your call. 😅
If a dealer or shop tells you it's needed, the right follow-up question is: "Can you show me the current fluid condition?" We're always happy to pull a sample and show you exactly what we're working with before any work is approved.
