Compressed-gas cylinder safety should be part of every shop and jobsite routine.
Cylinders should be kept upright and secured to prevent them from being knocked over. Valve protection caps should be in place when required for storage or transport, and cylinder valves should be closed when work is finished, the cylinder is empty or the cylinder is being moved.
Storage areas should be dry, protected and properly ventilated. Oxygen cylinders in storage must also be separated from fuel-gas cylinders or combustible materials by at least 20 feet or by a compliant noncombustible barrier.
These are general reminders. Always follow OSHA requirements, your facility’s safety procedures and the instructions provided for the specific gas and equipment being used.
Safety begins before the arc is struck.
