🦒 DAY TRIP FROM AMAZING ACRES
📍 Caldwell Zoo — Tyler, Texas
Looking for a day trip that gets you outside and gives you plenty to see along the way? Pack your walking shoes and head to Caldwell Zoo in Tyler!
Caldwell Zoo is home to more than 3,000 animals representing over 200 species, with areas devoted to Africa, North America and the Amazon. You can see everything from giraffes, elephants and lions to black bears, giant river otters, reptiles and colorful birds. Caldwell Zoo

🍴 When you're ready for a break, grab lunch at the Chakula Café overlooking the African area, or bring your own lunch and use one of the picnic areas outside the entrance.
🐘 A few tips before you go:
• Wear comfortable shoes — the zoo is mildly hilly.
• Go early and take your time instead of trying to rush through everything.
• Check the day's animal experiences and keeper talks when you arrive.

We shared what’s happening close to Amazing Acres, but sometimes a good event is worth putting a few more miles on the car. If you don’t mind driving about an hour or so, here are a few more things happening around East Texas and Northwest Louisiana this week.

Take a nighttime walk through downtown while hearing some of Longview’s haunted history, local legends and stories. Tours begin at the museum and tickets are $10.

Looking for something to do without spending half the day in the car? There are several things happening within about 45 minutes of Amazing Acres this week—from fall festivals and a movie in the park to Bigfoot and a little local history.

Bounce houses, costume contests, a pet costume contest, face painting, hayrides and more. Come a little early for the Fall Farmers Market from 4–7 PM, then stick around after the festival for Casper on the lawn at dusk.

A window with a view is nicer when you don’t have to wipe it off first.

Cool weather outside and cooking or showering inside can leave RV windows—and sometimes walls—damp with condensation.

Run vent fans during cooking and showers, crack a vent or window when practical, and use a dehumidifier as needed. Keep air moving behind furniture and inside cabinets, too.

The drawer or cabinet you open very carefully because you already know what’s waiting on the other side.

You reconsider your decision.
You open it anyway.

The Campground Friend Phenomenon
One of the funny things about RVing...
You can pull into a campground knowing absolutely nobody.
Then somebody asks where you're from.
Twenty minutes later you're swapping travel stories.
By the end of the stay, you're waving goodbye like you've been neighbors for years.
RV people have a funny way of finding each other.

DAY TRIP IDEA: THE FINAL ROAD OF BONNIE & CLYDE
Looking for a day trip that's a little different?
Head across the Louisiana line to Gibsland, where you can step into one of the most infamous chapters of American history.
The Bonnie & Clyde Ambush Museum tells the story of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow and the events that led to their final day on May 23, 1934. The museum is housed in the former café where the pair reportedly stopped shortly before the ambush and contains photographs, newspaper clippings, artifacts and exhibits connected to the case.
But don't stop at the museum!
After exploring the exhibits, follow Highway 154 south of Gibsland to the Bonnie & Clyde Ambush Site, where law officers waited along the rural Louisiana road and the pair's years on the run came to an end. A roadside monument marks the location today.
Take your time exploring Gibsland, grab some lunch, and you've got an unusual Northeast Louisiana history trip that's definitely not your everyday sightseeing destination.

🕘 Louisiana tourism currently lists the museum as open daily from 9 AM–5 PM. Because hours can change, we recommend checking before making the drive.

Plan on roughly 2 hours each way, depending on traffic and your route.
⚠️ A little heads-up for families: Some of the museum's displays deal directly with the violent end of Bonnie and Clyde's story and may not be suitable for younger visitors.
