It’s no secret auto dealer terminology is hard to follow.

But learning the basics of dealer-speak is key to picking the right vehicle — and snagging a great deal ;)

So allow us to clear up a few key terms:

- Acquisition Fee: This is the amount a dealer charges to initiate a lease. It usually covers the costs of processing the lease — such as credit reports and insurance verification.
- Up-Front Costs: This is the total of all costs you must pay when you sign the contract for your vehicle. It includes the downpayment and any additional fees.
- Buyout Price: This is how much it will cost to purchase a vehicle at the end of the lease term.
- Residual Value: The estimated value of a vehicle once it’s returned at the end of the lease term.
- Dealer Holdback: This is a small percentage of a vehicle’s overall cost that a manufacturer returns to the dealership once the car is sold.
- Trade-in Value: The amount a dealership will pay for your current vehicle when selling you a new one.

We wouldn’t either — so here’s a little tip to make the process easier!

Before you drop your hard-earned cash on a car, prepare a list of questions to ask the auto dealer.

This will clarify any uncertainties and ensure that you find a vehicle that suits your needs.

Here are some of the questions you’ll want to ask:

-What is the vehicle’s mileage?
-Does the vehicle come with aftermarket equipment?
-What — if any — service have you completed on it?
-What are your financing options?
-What does the warranty coverage include, and how long does it last?

You’ll want to buy from a dealer who takes the time to answer your questions — and makes you feel confident about the purchase you’re about to make.

So follow these tips to simplify the process!

First, do your research and investigate your options.

Before you start going for test drives, you’ll want to take some time to evaluate your automotive wants and needs.

From there, you can narrow your search to models that fit your requirements and price range.

Next, plan out your financing before you head to the dealership.

Getting pre-approved for a loan is your best bet. That way, you’ll have a little leverage and negotiating power at your disposal!

And, finally, because we all do well with a little help from our friends…

Bring someone with you to the dealership — even better if they have experience buying vehicles.
