While the final results of Tuesday’s midterm elections are still being determined, the shift in power in Washington is clear. Democrats are projected to take control of both the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate when the new Congress convenes in January, with several races still being counted.

For motorcyclists, a change in majority means new committee chairs, new staff and new faces deciding the issues that matter most to riders. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) will be on Capitol Hill from day one, building relationships with incoming members and their offices.

The MRF prides itself on focusing on lawmakers who support the motorcycling community, regardless of which party they belong to. Motorcycling is not a partisan issue. Riders come from every background and every political persuasion, and so do our champions in Congress. That approach is reflected in the bipartisan Congressional Motorcycle Caucus, and it will keep guiding our work no matter who holds the gavel.

“Elections come and go, and the balance of power in Washington is always going to shift, but our mission hasn’t changed,” said MRF President Kirk “Hardtail” Willard. “We remain focused on motorcycling, plain and simple. We’ll work with any lawmaker, Republican or Democrat, who is willing to stand up for the rights and safety of America’s riders. That’s what the MRF has always done, and that’s exactly what we’ll keep doing.”

The MRF will share more as final election results come in and committee assignments for the new Congress take shape. In the meantime, we encourage members to reach out to their newly elected representatives and senators, introduce themselves as riders, and let them know motorcyclists are paying attention. Strong relationships back home are what make our work in Washington effective.

Every four years, the spotlight lands on the White House. Who sits in the Oval Office dominates the headlines, the debates and the dinner-table arguments. But for motorcyclists, who holds power on Capitol Hill matters just as much and that is decided every two years.

Congress writes the laws and sets the budgets. Committee chairs decide which issues get a hearing and which ones gather dust, as the majority leaders decide what reaches the floor. That is where policy on autonomous vehicles, motorcyclist profiling, the right to repair and modify our bikes, and the next highway bill is won or lost.

On Tuesday, November 3, voters will decide all 435 House seats and roughly a third of the Senate. Control of one or both chambers could change hands, and with it the committee gavels, the staff and the priorities that shape what moves in our nation’s capital.

The timing matters. The next long-term highway bill, our best chance in years to write rider-friendly policy into federal transportation law, is still unfinished. Whoever holds power when Congress returns will shape that bill.

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) is prepared for whatever happens on Tuesday. Motorcyclists’ rights are not a partisan issue, and the MRF works with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

Our strength has never depended on which party is in charge. It comes from relationships: years of meetings, phone calls and Bikers Inside the Beltway visits that put real riders in front of lawmakers and their staff. When Congress moves fast, there is no time to introduce ourselves. Those relationships and trust are already built.

So, whatever the results, our work stays the same. We will congratulate the winners, reconnect with returning champions, and start building relationships with new members and their staff on day one. Majorities come and go. Relationships that protect motorcyclists’ rights are built to last.
