DO YOU OWN A DIESEL TRUCK? When was the last time you changed your Crankcase (PVC) Filter? Did you know that a clogged Crankcase Filter can potentially cause the rear main (crankshaft) seal in your vehicle to slip and leak oil, which can often result in potentially expensive repairs? While normal wear and tear on the crankshaft and the seal itself is the usual culprit for the need to replace the rear main seal, many people don’t realize that the back pressure caused by a clogged filter can also cause the seal to slip and leak.

Check your owners manual to see how often your filter should be replaced, and if you tow heavy loads, drive in extreme conditions, or spend a lot of time idling, you may need to change the filter more often than recommended. In the last seven weeks alone, we here at Gulf Coast Auto, Truck & Equipment Repair have repaired 5 diesel trucks with a leaking rear main seal. We suggest that if you haven’t changed your Crankcase Filter in the recommended time frame, consider asking for it to be done the next time you have your oil changed. It might even save you from a future headache!
