By letting us regularly service your equipment, you will be able to save money in the long run. After all, you’ve invested in a quality machine that should last for years with routine maintenance. Let us service your equipment and help prevent the little problems from becoming big and costly ones. We’ll service your equipment for a reasonable price. Secondary issues discovered while performing routine or specific maintenance will be discussed with the customer and additional costs will be added as needed. I prefer OEM replacement parts but of course they are more expensive than an aftermarket part. I’ve had several aftermarket part successes but I will discuss the options with the customer and let them choose. Please note, I will not guarantee any aftermarket part. Where applicable, this is what you get: oil/filter change, spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, fuel lines checked/replaced, differential/transmission fluid change, coolant change/top-off, lever/cable/linkage inspection, lights/switches, grease, inspect any boots/drive shafts/drive belts/chains/sprockets, valve clearances, air gap clearance, battery check, tire pressure, clutch head inspection, nuts/bolts tightened/torqued to spec……..just to list some of what will be done. If it’s a fuel issue, it may be a carburetor issue. If so, carburetors will be ultrasonically cleaned and rebuilt or replaced. Pick-up/delivery fee is $25.00 within the county. Outside of Hunterdon, $50.00. Antique restoration/repair will be priced based on the project. This includes research of the piece, part(s) availability or whether a part needs to be hand reproduced, materials, functionality or static display, and my time. We do not reupholster.

One of the machines we took care of yesterday was a 431 hour Husqvarna YTH21K46 with a Kohler single cylinder engine. The tractor came in due to excessive engine oil leaking through the exhaust and just creating one helluva mess. Compression was on the high end within specs so we focused on a valve issue. Performed a leak-down test and the engine failed. The top end of the engine was removed and cleaned. The intake and exhaust valve seats were inspected and to be in good condition. New intake and exhaust valves were lapped in and the intake valve seal was replaced. All new gaskets were installed and the engine was reassembled. Another leak-down test was performed and this time it passed. Fuel on, choke on, and the engine fired and purred on the first engine turnover. The best part…….no oil pouring out of the exhaust. At the county fairgrounds today dropping off the ole ’72 Kubota L210 I restored about seven years ago. I remember when dad traded in the Farmall and brought this home after purchasing it from the first Kubota dealer in Illinois in November 1971……seems like yesterday. Three more days until the start of the Hunterdon County 4-H and Agricultural Fair!! If attending, make sure you swing through the antique tractor barn to see some outstanding vintage pieces of machinery.

Last week one of the repairs we did was a prolific oil leak on a John Deere L120 Automatic garden rider. The owner did a decent job with keeping up the mess it was creating until we got to it. Nonetheless, it still ended up with 3 good degreasings and power washes to get all the accumulated crud off the machine. After resolving the first leak which was the topside, or flywheel side, of the crankcase oil seal, a secondary leak was spotted coming from the lower engine where the crankcase and sump pan meet. So the engine was pulled in order to replace the sump gasket which, you’ll see in one of the pics, a 2” section was actually sucked into the crankcase causing the leak. Days after returning the machine to the owner, we reached out to make sure there were no further leaks. Owner confirmed, no leaks. Comments are with the pics.

Each machine has been gone through, given full tuneups, and all missing/defective parts were replaced and/or repaired. Each machine starts first pull. Just a couple random before/after photos of some carbs failing due to old gas sitting in them along with moisture damage from ethanol. Remember, ethanol absorbs moisture from the air and gas float on water. First thing to get drawn into a carb will be the water. The machine won’t start (obviously) and then it sits like this until it’s removed. All the meanwhile, the water is now etching into the aluminum carb further creating muck. ALL fuel has ethanol unless you’re running to PA to get the ethanol-free stuff or aviation fuel. I treat my gas with a combo of pink Sta-Bil and Lucas ethanol treatment and have zero issues with any of my equipment to include the 2-cycle machines. People have their own opinions of additives which is fine. I just know what’s been working for me the past 25+ years. Also thrown in is a pic of a recent trans fan blade off a Cub Cadet rider......drive belt jumped a pulley and tore the hell out of the fan.

Client brought in a Honda self-propelled mower requesting the broken drive/clutch cable be replaced. You’ll see in the pics how the underside shield needed to be removed along with the trans spring released to tilt the trans forward to access the mounting point of the cable. Remainder of cable is fed through the deck and attached at the handle. Owner also stated it would only run for about 15 minutes and die each time he attempted to cut. He stated this past winter he brought the mower elsewhere to be repaired and only realized it wasn’t repaired when he broke it out for the season. First thing noticed when pulling the carb was someone replaced the original with an Amazon special along with the air and fuel filters. I have my own opinion of the cheap chinese knockoff kits, but nonetheless, the carb was pulled, disassembled, put through the ultrasonic cleaner, reassembled, and installed. Mower started right up and let run for 20 minutes, no issue. The following day, ran the mower for 30 minutes cutting grass, no issue. Mower was cleaned up and returned to a grateful owner.

Picked up this free Craftsman self-propelled mower needing a little love. Replaced both cables and had to replace both front wheels. The fronts are the self-propelled, are gear driven, and both had their teeth completely ground away. Usually what happens when you have a metal drive gear driving something plastic. Both rear wheels were at about a 30 degree angle with their plastic centers completely wore out. Plastic running on steel shafts. Swapping the fronts wouldn’t work due to different rim depths. So, to correct the issue, without having to order new wheels, and trying to fabricate something that would last……I pressed out the steel bushings from the old fronts, cut off 3/16” of their length, drilled out the rear wheel centers, and pressed in the steel bushings. Greased the shafts, slid the rear wheels on and tightened down the nuts. Better than new and now something that will last.

Owner brought in a barely used generator on account it could never be started along with an older backpack blower leaking gas. Generator required a thorough carb clean and gas removed due to water contamination. The carb was fairly gunked up and definitely had fingers crossed to salvage this one. The backpack blower just needed a new tank grommet, lines, and fuel filter. Comments are with the pics.

A second-owner Toro zero turn came in with several issues the owner wanted repaired. First and foremost, for it to start. This Toro had a Kohler EFI engine. How the fuel system works is a manual vacuum pump draws gas from the tank then sends it to the electronic fuel pump which then sends the gas to each cylinder. Noted during the diagnostics was water and debris in the fuel system. The seat and seat mount were removed to expose the fuel tank pickup tube in order to remove it and the debris accumulated in the screen. The tank was then cleaned of debris and water. Fuel lines were obviously blown dry and cleared at this point. Still no gas coming out of the vacuum pump so it was replaced……voila, we now had gas going to the electronic fuel pump. We had proper voltage going to the electronic fuel pump but still no power or gas. Pump was removed, cleaned, reinstalled and voila…..finally had a functioning fuel system and the engine fired right up. Next task was to replace the left side rear wheel hub since it had come loose at some point and completely egged out the lug holes. After a lengthy time heating, pulling, and beating, the old hub popped off and new one installed. Next, replace the missing right side rear lug bolt. While replacing the missing bolt, I noticed the hub was missing the entire brake assembly due to the mounting bracket snapping at some point prior to the current owner having the machine. The owner was contacted and given a replacement/installation cost and he opted to forego the brake replacement. At this point, the machine was given a once-over and prepped for delivery. Not many pics taken with this repair but as always, comments are with them.
