This one took some brain power. Had a customer that had a seemingly random shift issue. The vehicle would down shift & fail to go faster than 40mph. Shut the vehicle off and vehicle would act fine. No check engine warning and no warning to when it would act up. While at the shop the vehicle never acted up [typical] After running some te**es [all came back normal] we manually checked powers & grounds... And we found this. One of 4 ground points that go to the Engine Control Module [ECM] & the Transmission Control Module [TCM]. Since we never got the vehicle to act up on us, we cleaned the ground & crossed our fingers. Sometimes you don't have a smoking gun to point at. You just have to follow your gut.

I don't know about where you live. But here in Idaho falls, this has been one of the worst years for potholes in recent history. Seems like every road you drive down has at least one monster pothole just waiting for an unsuspecting car to swallow. Even if you manage to escape a seemingly bottomless pit, you might not be in the clear. Like this poor car, just minding it's own, when !%* # BAM. Customer had recently got this truck. And it starting making a rotational noise that seemed to be coming from the front diff. Upon disassembly we found the pinion bearing had failed sending debris throughout the diff. This is why a pre-buy inspection is such a good idea. Getting an overall view as to how the vehicle was maintained buy previous owners could save you THOUSANDS of dollars. Not much we can do to save it, just rebuild it and use high quality fluids.
