Some lower unit problems are best left to a shop. Not because they're impossible — but because the wrong move turns a $400 fix into a $1,500 one.
⚠️ Vibration at speed
Most of the time it's a bent prop. A prop shop can spin-test it for cheap. But if a fresh prop still shakes, you've got a bent prop shaft — and that means the gearcase comes apart.
⚠️ Whining or howling under load
Worn pinion bearing. Full teardown to get to it, and the gear mesh has to be re-shimmed on the way back together. Mess up the shim and the whole gear set chews itself up.
⚠️ Clutch dog worn or won't disengage
Same story — teardown, shimming, careful reassembly. Doable, but the shim work is what separates a repair from a do-over.
⚠️ Galled bearings or chipped gear teeth
This is what happens when milky oil gets ignored. The whole gear set has to come out and get inspected. Sometimes it's bearings. Sometimes it's a full rebuild.
⚠️ Cracked housing
Hairline cracks you can't see without dye. Once you find one, the only fix is swapping the housing — which means a full gearcase teardown to move the internals over.
