This is what “poor running” looked like inside.

This Stihl concrete saw came in running poorly. Once opened up, it was packed with concrete dust, had the wrong spark plug installed, and the carburetor was leaking fuel from clogged passageways.

Concrete dust is rough on equipment. It traps heat, restricts airflow, wears parts faster, and can turn a simple service into a bigger repair if ignored too long.

Starts cold, dies hot, then won’t restart?

That was the issue with this chainsaw. It would start and run normally when cold, but once the engine warmed up, the ignition coil would lose spark. The saw would die and would not restart until it cooled down again.

After opening it up, the saw was packed with dirt, sawdust, and debris around the flywheel, cooling area, and ignition coil. That buildup traps heat and can cause electrical parts like ignition coils to overheat and fail.

This repair needed a new ignition coil, cleaning, and inspection to get it back to work.

Regular service is not just about oil, plugs, and filters — buildup inside equipment can cause real failures.

🚨 **Small Engine Repair Rant of the Day: Electric Motors on OUTDOOR Equipment** 🚨

Who thought putting a poorly sealed electric motor inches above wet grass was a great idea? 😂

These pictures are from inside an **electric mower deck height-adjustment actuator** I diagnosed today. From the outside, everything looked fairly normal. Open it up and… **rust, corrosion, damaged brushes, and water intrusion everywhere.**

And the kicker? This mower is **stored in a shed when it isn't being used.** It isn't sitting outside getting rained on. Normal mowing conditions, wet grass, moisture, and years of use were enough to get water inside an electric motor that's literally designed to live on outdoor power equipment.

Eventually the corrosion caused the actuator motor to fail internally, and it appears the failing motor was pulling enough current to damage the deck-height switch along with it.

Sometimes I really miss the days of:

**Lever → linkage → deck moves.** 😂

No motors.
No switches.
No wiring.
No $100+ actuator ruined because moisture found its way inside.

Electric controls can be convenient when they're working, but putting electronics and small electric motors underneath lawn equipment where they're constantly exposed to grass, dirt, vibration, and moisture will never make much sense to me.

At least this one gave us a pretty good look at **exactly what water intrusion can do inside a supposedly outdoor-use electric motor.** 🔧

Unique repair in the shop this week.

This Boss Industrial 7-ton electric wood splitter came in completely dead. The customer said when the power button was pushed, nothing would happen.

Another shop had turned the job away because it was electric equipment — but not here at JBS Engine Repair LLC.

With my background in industrial maintenance, I was able to diagnose the issue and dig into the electric motor. The splitter had been left outside, water got into the motor, and rust/moisture caused it to lock up.

I opened the motor, inspected the bearings, cleaned out the rust, dried everything out, tested the capacitor, reassembled it, and got the motor running again.

Back from dead to working.

Starts cold, dies hot, won’t restart until it cools down?

That was the complaint on this Briggs & Stratton 19HP Intek engine. After diagnosis, the issue was found to be a failed compression release, which required camshaft replacement.

This is a common failure on Briggs Intek engines, and it can mimic other problems like fuel issues, ignition issues, weak battery, bad starter, or hard cranking.
