Fireworks Ban Approved Due to Fire Danger

At its June 16, 2026 meeting, the Alliance City Council voted to prohibit the sale and discharge of fireworks within the city limits due to ongoing drought conditions and elevated fire danger.

The decision was made out of concern for public safety and the significant fire risk currently facing our community. Dry conditions, high temperatures, and wind can quickly turn a small fireworks-related incident into a large and dangerous fire.

The Alliance Police Department would like to remind residents that this ordinance will be actively enforced. Violation of the fireworks ban may result in a citation carrying a fine of up to $1,000.00. Individuals who refuse to comply or who repeatedly violate the ordinance may be subject to custodial arrest and confiscation of fireworks.

We understand that fireworks are a longstanding Fourth of July tradition, but current conditions require everyone to do their part to protect lives, property, and our community. We appreciate your cooperation and ask that you help us keep Alliance safe during this period of elevated fire danger.

Please note that the decision regarding the City's public fireworks display on July 4th has not yet been made. Any permit for a public fireworks display will be evaluated by the Fire Chief based on current weather conditions, fuel moisture levels, fire danger, and an overall assessment of public safety risks at that time. While everyone hopes the community display can proceed as planned, public safety will remain the primary consideration in making that determination.

This is not a symbolic ban and it is not a suggestion. The current fire danger is real, and the ordinance will be enforced accordingly. We ask for your cooperation in helping prevent a potentially devastating fire and ensuring a safe Independence Day for everyone in our community.

Landfill 101 – June 2026

Each month, we share a landfill advisory to help our community better understand how to dispose of the “hard stuff.” These quick updates are designed to be helpful, easy to read, and focused on saving you time, money, and frustration when you visit the landfill.

Free Landfill Passes: What You Need to Know
City of Alliance residents receive free landfill passes each year—and they’re a great way to save money when used correctly.
If you receive an envelope from the City this month, be sure to open it—your passes are inside.
________________________________________

How the Passes Work
Each resident receives:
• 2 free landfill passes
• Each pass is tied to your name and city account number
• Expiration date: June 30, 2027
Each pass covers one load, no matter the size—but it is one load per pass.

What You Can Use Them For
Free passes work great for:
• Household cleanups
• Garage or storage unit cleanouts
• Large items like couches or mattresses
Using your passes is a great alternative to dumping items in alleys or other illegal disposal.
________________________________________

What They Do NOT Cover
At the bottom of each pass, it states they are not valid for certain materials, including:
• Construction & demolition (C&D) debris
(We covered this in last month’s post—these materials have separate handling requirements.)
• Appliances
This can be confusing—what it means is appliances that contain Freon, such as:
o Refrigerators
o Freezers
✅ Allowed:
o Ovens
o Dishwashers
o Other non-Freon household items
Why?
Appliances with Freon require special handling to safely remove the refrigerant before disposal. This process takes extra time and equipment, so they are not covered by free passes.
• Tires
If you’re ever unsure whether something counts, just ask at the scale or give us a call—we’re happy to help.
________________________________________

Common Mistakes to Avoid
• Forgetting to bring your pass with you
• Assuming it covers restricted materials
• Trying to use one pass for multiple loads
A little preparation helps ensure everything goes smoothly when you arrive.
________________________________________

The Bottom Line
Free landfill passes are a valuable benefit for City residents.
Using them the right way:
• Saves you money
• Helps keep Alliance clean
• Keeps disposal quick and efficient
