Your tires keep a record of how your car is driving, and you can learn to read it. Wear on the inside or outside edge usually points to an alignment issue. Wear down the center often means too much air. Wear on both shoulders points to too little. Cupping or scalloping can signal worn suspension parts. Take a look at your own tires this week. Here is a truth that surprises people: you can buy premium tires and still wear them out in half the time. The deciding factor is alignment. It sets the angle at which your tires meet the road, and when it drifts even slightly, your tires scrub sideways on every rotation while you drive in a perfectly straight line. It's called the bounce test. It tells you whether your shocks and struts are doing their job.
Here's how:
▪️ Park on level ground, engine off
▪️ Push down hard on the front corner of the vehicle, then let go
▪️ Watch what happens A healthy shock lets the body come back up and STOP in one motion.
A worn shock lets it bounce one or two more times before settling. Do all four corners. Any corner that bounces more than once is telling you something. Worn shocks don't just feel different. They extend your stopping distance, they cause cupped wear on your tires, and they make your alignment drift faster. The Albuquerque pothole calendar means our local vehicles see suspension wear two or three years ahead of smoother climates.
