WINTER CAN BE HARD ON YOUR RV’S PLUMBING

Winter can turn a small amount of trapped water into a plumbing problem. And if your RV spends the winter in storage, the damage may not show itself until you turn the water back on in spring.

One area worth paying attention to is the plumbing underneath and inside your RV.

Soft vs. Hard Plumbing: Flexible PEX is common in RVs because it’s lightweight and can tolerate freezing better than rigid pipe, but that doesn’t mean it’s freeze-proof. Fittings, connections, and other components can still crack or fail when water freezes.

If you're replacing worn or damaged plumbing, consider whether a properly supported hard-pipe section makes sense for that particular location.

The goal isn't simply to make everything rigid. It's to use the right material and installation for the area while minimizing vulnerable connections.
The bigger winter protection is getting the water out.

Before storing your RV:

• Drain the fresh-water system and low-point drains
• Drain the water heater according to the manufacturer’s instructions
• Blow out the lines or use RV-safe antifreeze according to your RV manufacturer’s procedure
• Don't forget appliances and accessories that use water
• Inspect exposed plumbing, fittings, and connections for wear or leaks
• Check underneath the RV for areas where cold air can reach vulnerable plumbing

And don't forget the other winter problem: rodents. Remove food and crumbs, clean storage areas, and look for possible entry points before your RV sits unused. Rodents can cause plenty of damage while you're away.
