Six years.
Six years ago today, at approximately 2:40 a.m., our lives were changed forever.
On September 17, 2020, Jason Willis was working on the side of Interstate 20, doing what tow operators do every day: helping a stranded motorist get home safely. While loading a vehicle, Jason was struck and killed by a passing driver who never stopped. To this day, we still do not have the answers Jason's family, friends, and coworkers deserve.
Jason was more than a tow truck operator. He was a husband, a father, a friend, a teammate, and a man who showed up when people needed help most. He took pride in serving others and represented the very best of our profession.
Over the last six years, we have refused to let his story be forgotten. Through the movement, we have honored Jason's memory by educating the public, advocating for safer roads, and working with lawmakers to strengthen South Carolina's Slow Down Move Over protections to include tow truck operators and other roadway responders. His legacy is helping protect countless men and women who put their lives on the line every day.
But our mission is not finished.
Since Jason was killed, more than 100 additional roadside assistance providers and tow operators have lost their lives after being struck while helping others on the side of America's highways. Research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that roadside workers continue to be killed at an alarming rate, with approximately 18 to 20 operators losing their lives each year simply for doing their jobs.
For six years, we have carried Jason's memory with us. We have shared his story. We have fought for awareness. We have pushed for change. Yet one thing remains unchanged: Justice has never been served.
Someone knows what happened that night. Someone knows who struck Jason and left the scene. Someone has the missing piece of information that could finally provide answers to the people who loved him most.
Today, we remember Jason. We honor his sacrifice. We support his family. And we renew our promise that his name will not be forgotten.
Please Slow Down. Move Over. Pay Attention.
Because behind every tow truck is a family waiting for someone they love to come home.
