Here is a quick tip for anyone shopping for a used car from a private seller in Massachusetts. Take a look at the inspection sticker on the windshield.

A passing sticker has a black number that shows the month it expires, while a vehicle that failed will display a black R. An expired sticker or a reject sticker does not automatically mean the car is a bad buy, but it is a good reason to ask questions and have the car checked before you agree on a price. Getting a reject sticker is frustrating, but it is not the end of the world. If your car fails the Massachusetts inspection, you will receive a printed report that shows exactly why.

Once the problem is repaired, every vehicle is entitled to one free re-inspection within 60 calendar days at the station that originally failed it. If you are buying a used car, a recent failed inspection report is also worth asking about, because it tells you what needed attention. Every registered vehicle in Massachusetts needs an inspection once a year, and newly purchased vehicles must be inspected within seven days of registration. The inspection covers both safety and emissions.

On the safety side, inspectors check items like brakes, steering, suspension, tires, lights, wipers, mirrors, the horn, seat belts and the exhaust system. On most newer cars, the emissions part is a check of the car's onboard computer. Parrotta's is a Massachusetts state inspection station, and we perform inspections Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5 PM, with the shop closed for lunch from noon to 1. You do not need to be a mechanic to spot some warning signs on a used car. Walk around it in good daylight and look for paint that does not quite match, uneven gaps between body panels and tires that are worn more on one edge than the other.

In New England, rust is a big concern, so crouch down and look at the bottom of the doors, the wheel wells and anything you can see underneath.
