Straight Steering Starts Here

Wheel alignment is one of those maintenance items you probably don’t notice until something doesn’t feel quite right. But alignment plays a major role in how safely and smoothly your vehicle handles. If your wheels aren’t all pointed in the right direction, everything from steering response to tire life is affected.

Your vehicle can get out of alignment for several reasons. Everyday driving alone can gradually shift alignment angles, especially on rough or uneven roads. You can knock your suspension out of whack instantly when you hit a pothole, curb or debris on the road. Worn suspension components—like ball joints, tie rods or control arm bushings—also can contribute to misalignment over time. For instance, if you have new tires installed or suspension parts replaced without a proper alignment, that can cause uneven handling and premature wear.

Alignment service is important for many reasons. First of all, it protects your tires. Misalignment causes uneven tread wear, which shortens tire life and reduces traction. That means you’ll get less grip during braking and cornering, especially in wet conditions. Proper alignment also improves fuel efficiency by reducing rolling resistance; it helps your vehicle move more smoothly down the road.

Safety is another major factor. A vehicle that pulls to one side, wanders or has an off‑center steering wheel is harder to control, especially at higher speeds. Alignment service restores stability and steering precision. You’ll also find it improves overall driving confidence.

Control Arms: Small Part, Big Impact

Here’s one part of your vehicle you may never have heard of: the control arm. It’s the part that connects the wheel hub and steering knuckle to your vehicle’s frame. What it does is lets your wheel move up and down while keeping it aligned with your vehicle.

Most control arms have things called ball joints and bushings. They take a constant beating and wear out after a while. It’s important to make sure your control arms are in good shape so your steering is stable and handling easy. It also reduces wear on your tires and allows your suspension parts to wear evenly.

How do you know if you need a new control arm? You might feel clunks or knocking sounds every time you drive over a bump. Your tires may wear unevenly and you might feel your steering wheel vibrate. You might find your vehicle pulls to one side when you’re driving.

If you notice some of these signs, it’s a good idea to bring your vehicle over so one of our technicians can check things out. If they find you need a new control arm, they’ll remove the old one, install the new one and tighten bolts to specifications recommended by the manufacturer.

Sometimes we recommend replacing other components, such as sway bars, if it appears they’ve worn out. It’s also a good idea to have us replace both control arms to keep your handling even. And after a control arm replacement, it’s best to have us perform a wheel alignment.

Why is My Vehicle Overheating?

When it comes to your vehicle overheating, the signs can be loud and clear when you have a problem. You may see a thermometer-shaped warning light come on or a temperature gauge whose needle is pointing in the red zone. When either of those happen, it’s important to take quick action to avoid serious damage.

An overheating engine usually results when the cooling system can’t remove heat fast enough. Among the most common reasons for overheating is that the amount of coolant in your engine is low. That coolant circulates through your engine, absorbs heat and then heads toward the radiator, where it can get rid of the heat.

So, what causes that coolant to be low? Often there’s a leak somewhere in the system. The radiator, water pump or the engine block can all develop leaks as can the hoses that carry the coolant from one part to the next. You can also get leaks when the clamps that connect them fail.

Another part that can go bad is the thermostat, which can cause the engine to heat up quickly. So can a broken water pump. The pump is supposed to keep coolant moving through the system. But when it fails, the coolant isn’t moving and therefore can’t carry heat away from the engine.

Other possible causes of overheating is a clogged radiator or a fan that’s not circulating air through it. Also, don’t forget that the coolant in your vehicle has to have the correct mix of water and antifreeze.

Why is a cool engine so important? Because heat is your engine’s worst enemy. Having a technician regularly keep an eye on your cooling system can help prevent problems before they start.

The Car Fluid Most Drivers Forget—And Why It Matters

Here’s an automotive part you might not be familiar with—the differential. It’s a component that transfers power from the driveshaft to the wheels. It’s called a differential because the left and right drive wheels travel at different speeds when you make a turn. During that turn, the wheel on the outside travels farther than the one on the inside, so the outside wheel is turning faster.

Your vehicle’s differential works by having gears that regulate the whole process. It has fluid inside to reduce friction between the gears. As you can imagine, those gears have a heavy load to handle, so this differential fluid helps reduce friction between the metal parts as they’re moving. The fluid also carries heat away from the gears to keep temperatures down in the differential.

After a time, the heat and the loads take their toll on the differential fluid. It starts to accumulate little metal particles from the gears wearing down. After a while, your differential fluid isn’t as efficient in cooling and lubricating the gears. The gears start making noise, aren’t as smooth as before and can reduce your fuel economy. Let the fluid stay in too long and you can wind up having to replace the differential itself, an expensive repair.

The best way to make your differential last as long as possible is by having the differential fluid changed at intervals recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer. Your differential will not only last longer, it will make for smoother operation. It’s especially important if you use your vehicle for towing or do a lot of driving in stop and go traffic.

It’s a fluid many drivers forget about, but maintaining your differential fluid will pay off in the long run.
