I’ve had a lot of questions lately about ceramic coatings, and I’ve found there are a lot of misconceptions out there. So here’s a little Ceramic Coating Myth Busters.

Ceramic Coatings WILL NOT:

❌ Make it so you never have to wash your car again.
❌ Act like armor and prevent scratches.
❌ Prevent water spots.

Ceramic Coatings WILL:

✅ Create a slick surface that’s easier to wash.
✅ Cut down washing and drying time.
✅ Make bugs, road grime, and dirt easier to remove.
✅ Buy you time when bird droppings, tree sap, or other acidic contaminants land on your paint.
✅ Resist many chemicals and environmental contaminants.
✅ Take the initial hit from etching contaminants before they reach your clear coat.
✅ Add gloss and enhance the look of your paint.
✅ Provide UV protection that helps slow oxidation and fading over time.

That said, most of the gloss and clarity people notice comes from the prep work—the washing, decontamination, compounding, and polishing that takes place before the coating is applied.

Water spots, bird droppings, sap, and other contaminants can still etch if left on the surface long enough. The difference is that the ceramic coating takes the hit, buying you valuable time to safely remove them.

One of the biggest benefits I see? The amount of time spent washing and drying your vehicle is often cut nearly in half. The vehicle stays cleaner longer, washes easier, and drying becomes much less of a chore.

Ceramic coatings aren’t magic—but when properly applied and maintained, they’re one of the best ways to make keeping your vehicle looking great easier.

Last week I gave this one a thorough wash and dry followed by some polishing. Many of the chrome areas had to be hand polished. The paint received our premium wax after some light polishing as well.

A year and a half ago, this truck received one of our 2-year ceramic coatings, and the wheels were protected with a 1-year wheel coating from the same product line.

The truck’s wide tires throw a lot of dirt, grime, and road debris onto the paint, and the coatings definitely haven’t received the maintenance I typically recommend. Even so, after a thorough wash and decontamination, the paint coating came right back to life.

What impressed me most was the wheel coating. Despite being well past its 1-year rating, it was still helping repel contamination and made cleanup noticeably easier.

This is exactly why I like these coatings. Real-world durability, easier maintenance, and long-lasting protection without breaking the bank. Properly maintained, I would expect even better results.

Not every vehicle lives a pampered life, and that’s where a quality coating really proves its value.

At Garage 17 I care more about real-world results than flashy marketing claims.

The truth is, I see plenty of vehicles with expensive long-term coatings that are still heavily swirled and marked up a few years later anyway. No coating is magic if the vehicle isn’t maintained properly.

That’s why I believe 3 years is the sweet spot for a ceramic coating. A properly prepped and maintained 3-year coating that looks phenomenal and performs consistently simply makes more sense.

I’m also a big believer in the product line I use because it works perfectly with maintenance products and wax toppers, including carnauba wax infused with the same ceramic products, helping maintain that deep, warm super slick gloss people love while keeping maintenance easier.
