Have you ever heard the term "valley job"? The "valley" of an engine is the term we use for the sunken area between the cylinder banks, and a "valley job" is what we call it when a job is going to require going deep into the engine to fix the problem. This is where the jobs begin to become extensive, you need to take the time and have the patience, and ability to hold your focus, and you end up accomplishing something pretty major for a customer when you're done. We've discussed before how running rich can arise from problems with air flow to your engine, when the air:fuel mixtures in that your spark plugs ignite are too rich in fuel or too poor in air, but what about the opposite condition, when they are too rich in air or too poor in fuel? Then, you're "running lean", and that can have negative impacts on your engine, too. Lean conditions can have multiple causes, including unmetered air leaks allowing too much air for rush in and problems with fuel delivery, not pulling enough fuel in. However, regardless of the cause, the consequences can be severe if left unchecked: higher engine temperatures and inconsistent combustion can melt spark plug electrodes and damage exhaust valves, premature ignitions can lead to knocks that can damage pistons, and, ultimately, damage to pistons and cylinders can lead to catastrophic engine failure. Don't let things get that far! Blue smoke in your exhaust is a sign that you're burning oil, and that could mean that you've got worn piston rings or valve stem seals that are allowing oil to seep into your combustion chambers. These are problems that, left unattended, can lead to serious mechanical damage to your engine that could spell disaster for your car or truck. It can set off a chain of downstream events where oil coats and compromises your spark plugs, oil residue damages your oxygen sensors, and oil ash destroys your catalytic converter. If your car or truck is "running rich" you'll have fairly obvious symptoms: black smoke in your exhaust, perhaps rough idling, maybe even misfires. This condition happens when fuel is more abundant than air in your engine. Your vehicle runs with a strict ratio of 14.7 parts of air for every 1 part of fuel, but if air flow is restricted or impaired or your fuel pump is sending too much fuel to your engine, that ratio can be put off-balance. There are a few things that can contribute to this condition, but figuring out which one (or ones) are to blame requires some expertise to get it right.
