On January 19th 1945, exactly 75 years ago, count Domenico Agusta gave birth to what has become probably the most prestigious motorcycle brand in the world and for sure the most successful Italian brand in competitions with 37 World Titles.
A heritage that sink its roots in the Agusta family business: the family was engaged since 1910 in the airplane manufacturing, demostrating an innovative mindset and a brilliant vision on the future ahead.
But at the end of WWII, it was clear to count Domenico Agusta that airplanes wouldn't guarantee continuity to its family company - the "Cotruzioni Aeronautiche Giovanni Agusta" named after his first founder and father Giovanni - in a country where people would have needed to move freely after the end of the conflict.
For this reason, by the end of 1943 an alternative was almost ready: motorcycles. And so the first engine built, the 98cc, was designed. (but we will tell about this in our Anniversary milestone #6).
By the end of the war the production of the first bike was ready and so Domenico Agusta proceeded to found a new company based in Cascina Costa (near the airfields of Malpensa, Lombardy) named "Meccaniche Verghera S.r.l."
By the autumn of 1945 - the war was finally over - the first MV 98 was advertised on the periodic press. In a period of great rebirth for Milano and Italy, with many small producers appearing on the motorcycle market (and many other quickly disappearing), the brand MV took its first step of a much longer history.
In these pictures: the frames production laboratory in Verghera in the first years of the company and a picture of the 98 cc. Follow the next milestones to know more about MV historic models and heritage.
