50nm left to sail to our half way destination - Changi Sailing Club, Singapore.
Had a bit on last night when a thunderstorm over Sumatra caught up with us in a big way. Welcome to the Malacca Strait! Cruising along in a nice 10k easterly land breeze about 3am, we could see the lightning to the west. The jib back winded rather suddenly so I called for it to be lowered. As soon as it hit the deck, the westerly hit. Within 10 minutes it was game on, with constant over 30k (luckily aft of the beam) and hard rain. Visibility reduced to zero and although we were just out of the oncoming shipping lane, we still had to contend with the fishing boats and nets! The DK46 delivery main felt too big for these conditions at times, doing 15k with main ragging, which tells me it was probably close to 40k in the gusts.
This lasted till sunrise and then the breeze dropped to 20k and we hoisted the jib again and blasted along doing over 10k all morning with the biggest wind swell I’ve seen in this area. Awesome sailing on Aftershock, she loves it!
We covered some good miles and saved a heap of diesel. Ahead of schedule by 6 hours. 🚀

Day 3 from Pangkor to Port Klang, this stretch never fails to provide some action!
After battling some moderate headwinds and choppy seas (wishing I had the sturdy leather lounge back on board). We just skirted to windward of the Angsa Bank pile. Then rather smooth sailing as the land breeze dominated again around sunset.
As we approached the Port Klang shipping channel we crossed a massive tide line full of debris. As it was dark, it caught us off guard and just our luck we snagged a huge tree that looked like it came out of the Lord of the Rings. There were branches engulfing the hull on both sides! Took a bit of reversing work and a solid boat hook technique from Jacob to release it. Luckily we were sailing for the first time without motor and we escaped the net attached to the tree from entangling our propeller.
Shortly after we saw this block of flats exiting the Port Klang channel, always the optimist I said we can out run this and cross its bow. Jacob the apprentice skipper said “I dunno about that” Yep he was right that thing was doing 18knots on the AIS, a quick 90 degree turn upwind was the safest option 🫣😳
Oh and another 3 MOB AIS alarms today. I wasn’t as concerned with these ones. Malaysian fishermen playing with their new toys 🤭

Day 2 and settling into life on the lounge with sunshade working a treat.
Very little wind and flat sea, no thunderstorms yet. Could be worse I guess.

Responded to a fishing trawler with MOB AIS activated. He just waved at us like Forest Gump lol
Alarm went off for over an hour, no helicopter deployed over here 😆
Missed something big on the fishing line. That’s one lucky fish! To avoid all the nets and trawlers around here and spit out our lure.

Now south side of Penang, waiting for the sea of red flashing lights! 🤞🙏
