Wat Tham Chiang Dao – A Sacred Journey into Thailand’s Hidden Mountain World.

If you’re exploring northern Thailand and want to experience something truly special beyond the usual tourist routes, Chiang Dao Cave Temple (Wat Tham Chiang Dao) should be high on your list.

Located at the foot of Doi Luang Chiang Dao, Thailand’s third highest mountain, this sacred cave temple combines nature, history, and spirituality in one fascinating place. It’s only about 70 km north of Chiang Mai, making it a perfect half-day or full-day trip by car or scooter.

Practical Tips for Visiting Chiang Dao Cave:
🕯️ Bring small cash for entrance and guide fee.
👟 Wear good shoes – the cave floor can be slippery.
👕 Dress respectfully (it’s an active temple).
📸 Photography is allowed, but be respectful.
🛵 Best reached by car or scooter for full flexibility.

A Cave with Over 400 Years of History!
The Chiang Dao Cave has been used by humans since at least the 17th century as a shelter and a place of worship. For local people, this is one of the most sacred sites in the entire region.

The cave itself is a large limestone system stretching deep into the mountain. The front sections are illuminated, while deeper parts can only be explored with a local guide carrying a lantern – which makes the experience even more atmospheric.

How Much Time Should You Plan?
You can easily spend 1.5 hours or more at Chiang Dao Cave:
About 30–45 minutes exploring the temple grounds.
Another 30–60 minutes inside the cave (depending how far you go).

The best way to visit Chiang Dao Cave and explore the region is with your own car or scooter. No schedules, no stress – just pure freedom.

Wat Mae Ead - Viewpoint in Chiang Dao

Wat Mae Ead in Chiang Dao is a fascinating and unusual Buddhist temple set in a scenic mountain area in northern Thailand. Although it is not an ancient temple, it impresses visitors with its large-scale statues of Buddha, monks, and mythological creatures that feel unexpected in such a quiet, rural location. One of its highlights is the enormous statue of Phra Upakhut, along with artistic elements like a giant gong at the entrance.

The most striking part of the temple is the series of sculptures depicting hell or purgatory. These vivid and sometimes shocking scenes are meant to teach moral lessons according to Theravada Buddhist beliefs. At the top of the temple grounds, a golden monk statue leads to an observation point offering beautiful views over Chiang Dao and the surrounding mountains.
