Different shock length right out of the box? 🛠️📐 Here’s what every mechanic needs to know about "Length Differences During Installation."

Have you ever unboxed a brand-new aftermarket shock absorber, compared it side-by-side with the old factory unit, and noticed that the fully extended length is slightly different? It’s common to worry that you received the wrong part number. 🤔

At KYB, we want to reassure technicians that this is a perfectly normal characteristic in automotive engineering. Because aftermarket units often feature upgraded internal valving and specialized gas/fluid chamber designs, their extended open-length can vary by a few millimeters compared to the worn-out original parts. During installation, it may be necessary to slightly raise the axle or the suspension assembly to align and securely attach the shock mountings.
In fact, this length variance is common even when you are replacing components with brand-new, original equipment (OE) factory units. Once properly bolted in, the shock will perfectly support the vehicle weight and restore the correct ride height and damping performance according to 100% factory specifications.
