A car battery lasts one to two years in Singapore. We said that last week and nobody argued with us.

So here is the fair follow-up question. Does anything last longer?

One thing does. Lithium iron phosphate — LiFePO4. Up to eight years in the same heat that finishes a lead-acid battery in eighteen months.

Not because it is better built. Because it fails differently. Lead-acid dies here when heat boils off the fluid inside and corrodes the plates. LiFePO4 has no fluid to boil and no plates to corrode. Heat is simply not its weakness.

Over eight years that is the difference between buying four to six batteries and buying one. Plus the mornings you did not spend waiting for a jump start.

Now the part we would rather you heard from us. It costs more on day one. Noticeably more. It earns that back over years, not months. So if you are selling the car next year, buy the lead-acid and don't think about it again.

It is worth it if you keep your car five years or more. If you run start-stop. If you have a dashcam, upgraded audio and chargers all pulling power while the engine is off.
