When checking Japanese auto auction sheets, mentions of rust often raise immediate concerns. It is easy to look at a brownish cast-iron suspension component and assume the worst.

But context matters. Bare metal parts under a vehicle are exposed to moisture daily, meaning a light layer of brownish surface oxidation is simply a normal part of aging. This superficial discoloration does not affect the structural integrity of a lower control arm or chassis component.

๐Ÿ”ง Why Do You Feel Knocks in the Suspension When Driving Over Bumps?

When you drive over a pothole, speed bump, or rough road, the suspension system has to absorb the impact and control the movement of the wheel. A major component responsible for controlling this movement is the suspension bushing.

Suspension bushings are usually made from rubber or polyurethane and are installed between components such as the control arm and subframe. They allow controlled movement while reducing vibration, road shock, and noise from reaching the vehicle body.

When a bushing is in good condition, its rubber remains flexible and holds the suspension component firmly in position. As the wheel moves over a bump, the bushing flexes and absorbs part of the impact. This helps maintain stable wheel movement and provides a smoother, quieter ride.

However, as the bushing ages, it can become cracked, hardened, torn, or separated from its metal sleeve. Once this happens, excessive movement or play can develop between the suspension components.

When the vehicle hits a bump, the control arm may move farther than it should. That sudden movement can produce a knocking or clunking sound. You may also notice increased vibration, unstable or wandering steering, uneven tyre wear, or a loose feeling from the front end.

Worn bushings are not the only possible cause. Similar symptoms can come from worn ball joints, tie-rod ends, shock absorbers, suspension mounts, loose bolts, or damaged control arms.

If you hear repeated knocking over bumps, don't simply ignore it. A mechanic should inspect the suspension for excessive play, cracks, leaks, and loose components. After replacing suspension parts, a wheel alignment may also be necessary.

Electric Power Steering (EPS) is a modern steering system that uses an electric motor and electronic control unit (ECU) to assist the driver instead of relying on a hydraulic pump.

When the driver turns the steering wheel, a torque sensor detects the amount and direction of steering effort. This information is sent to the EPS ECU, which also considers vehicle speed and other operating conditions.

The ECU then determines how much assistance is required. At low speeds, such as during parking, the system provides more assistance, making the steering wheel much easier to turn. At higher speeds, assistance is reduced to provide a more stable and controlled steering feel.

The electric assist motor generates the required torque and transfers it through the steering mechanism. Depending on the vehicle design, the motor may assist through the steering column or directly at the steering rack.

The steering shaft and intermediate shaft transmit the driver's steering movement toward the steering gear. At the bottom, the rack-and-pinion mechanism converts the rotational movement of the steering shaft into linear movement, pushing or pulling the tie rods and turning the front wheels.

One major advantage of EPS is that the electric motor operates only when assistance is needed. Unlike hydraulic power steering, there is no continuously driven hydraulic pump, which can reduce mechanical losses and help improve fuel efficiency.

The timing chain keeps the camshaft and crankshaft synchronized so the valves open and close at exactly the right time. As a chain stretches or its guides and tensioner wear, valve timing can gradually move out of specification. The symptoms may begin subtly but can become serious if ignored.

A loose chain or weak tensioner can produce a metallic rattling sound for a few seconds after starting, especially when oil pressure has not yet built up.
