Success: different speed limits for motorcycles rejected.

Proposals to establish different speed limits for cars and motorcycles ánd differentiated speed limits for holders of A1, A2 and A motorcycle licences were rejected during a vote in the Transport and Tourism Committee of the European Parliament.

There you are on your morning commute traveling at a snail’s pace on Highway 1 southbound from Lightfighter to Monterey. You’re thinking about the last episode of your favorite TV show, when ZOOM goes a motorcycle between the lanes of traffic!

You think to yourself is that legal?!

Yes. Yes it is. Although it is highly encouraged to only be conducted by experienced motorcyclists. Here is what the California Vehicle Code has to say:

LANE SPLITTING—Defined by California Vehicle Code Section 21658.1 as driving a motorcycle, as defined in Section 400, that has two wheels in contact with the ground, between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane, including on both divided and undivided streets, roads, or highways.

Here are some safety tips for all drivers:

~Checking mirrors and blind spots, especially before changing lanes or turning.

~Signaling your intentions before changing lanes or merging with traffic.

~Being alert and anticipating possible movements by other motorists.

~Never riding/driving while impaired by drugs, alcohol, or fatigue.

~Being courteous and sharing the road.

FEMA’s Mobility test, held in a number of European cities, once again shows that riding on two wheels will get you to your destination quickest and cheapest.
