Fleet managers ordered this car for one reason.
It was Chevrolet's cheapest car.
Then somebody spent 4 years turning it into this.

After 4 years of work, the build was completed in 2012. The original body lines remain intact. It now features two-tone red and black paint, a red leather interior, a clock, a 4-speed manual transmission, power steering, and disc brakes on all 4 wheels. Under the hood, polished intake components and dual exhaust manifolds add to the custom look. It also has air conditioning and remote-controlled, smoothed-out doors.

Here's how it started.

In 1955, the Chevrolet 150 was a basic fleet model with a starting price of less than $1,600. The standard engine was a 235 ci six-cylinder rated at 123 hp. Buyers could also opt for a 265 ci V8, rated at 162 hp, 180 hp with the Power Pack, or 195 hp in a higher-output version. Chevrolet called the 1955 lineup "The Hot One," but the entry-level 150 didn't have the same appeal as the Bel Air.

Now, this once-basic fleet car has a very different personality.

Release the clutch in first gear, and the dual exhaust responds with a deep, throaty roar at low RPMs.

So what's under the hood? A 454 ci big-block, an engine Chevrolet didn't introduce until 1970, 15 years after this body style debuted.

At every cruise night, there's a '55 that draws a crowd. Its owner always has a story to tell.
