Today is international coffee day! Sometimes coffee gets a bad reputation, but like many things, when it comes to coffee.. it’s about the dose (and timing).
One thing to be aware of is that coffee has about a 5-6 hour half life, meaning after 5-6 hours of consumption, you still have approximately half the amount of caffeine in your bloodstream. So it’s best to limit your caffeine to earlier in the day.
With that said, there are many health benefits to coffee, such as the ones listed below.
1) coffee is a powerful antioxidant, Research has shown that people suffering from low mood and depression have higher levels of oxidation.
2) Coffee has potent anti-inflammatory properties. Those suffering worse-than-average mental health have been shown to have elevated levels of inflammatory markers in their blood. Again, much like the SSRIs that are often prescribed to people with depression, drinking coffee every day has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect and thus to decrease both the likelihood and the intensity of depression and other negative emotional states.
3) Caffeine acts in a similar way to SSRI drugs. Like most prescribed antidepressants, caffeine blocks receptors in the brain from binding with a chemical called adenosine that is strongly correlated to fatigue and depression.
4) livespan, Recent studies found that coffee drinkers are less likely to die from some of the leading causes of death in women: coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease.
5) You may decrease your risk of getting Alzheimer's disease. caffeine in coffee may provide significant protection against developing the condition.
