This week's animal welfare news for every kind ⤵ļø
1. Joining forces for reptiles
We're proud to be working with the Reptile and Exotic Pet Trade Association (REPTA), to raise awareness of the welfare concerns associated with harmful genetic traits in reptiles. This follows our endorsement of REPTAās Deleterious Genes Policy, which provides a framework for identifying and addressing genetic traits associated with significant health and welfare problems.
This approach will bring together our animal welfare expertise with REPTAās sector-led approach to tackling harmful genetic traits. For more information, we've linked to our strategy report, The Shape of Suffering, and REPTAās DGP policy in the comments
2. Victory Shared On Air
Our Head of Campaigns and Public Affairs, David Bowles, joined David Thomas on the āAnimal Rights: the Debateā podcast. The episode focuses on how to win animal welfare campaigns, most specifically, our success with the live animal exports ban. Tune in to hear them discuss the efforts that went into ending the trade and the lessons learnt along the way. Available now on Spotify and Apple Music and via the link in our comments.
3. Spreading the word for āFashion Victimsā
Last week, our Scientific and Policy Manager, Ashleigh Brown presented at the Norwegian Society for Protection of Animalsā āDog Breeding for the Future 2.0ā event outlining our work to address the harm that's being caused to companion animals from breeding for extreme physical features.
4. International Inspiration
Last week, our RSPCA International team was in Vienna for the second World Federation for Animals (WFA) General Assembly, generously hosted by fellow WFA member, FOUR PAWS.
The event brought together almost 100 leaders and advocates from five continents to share expertise, and inspire each otherās work. Reflections included recent work with the United Nations, and ways we can push animal welfare further up the global agenda. Weāre also pleased to share that our Director of Advocacy & Prevention, Thomas Schultz-Jagow, has been elected as the RSPCAās representative on the WFA Board.
