Types of Splined Shafts & Their Uses:
A splined shaft is a mechanical power-transmission component with multiple teeth or grooves formed along its circumference. These splines provide positive torque transmission between a shaft and a mating hub, gear, coupling, or other rotating component while maintaining accurate alignment.
Unlike a simple keyed shaft, splines distribute the transmitted load across multiple teeth, making them highly suitable for high-torque and heavy-duty applications.
π© Types of Splined Shafts
1οΈβ£ Straight Splined Shaft
Uses parallel spline teeth along the shaft. It is a simple and widely used design for torque transmission.
2οΈβ£ Stepped Splined Shaft
Contains spline sections with different diameters, allowing multiple components or different torque levels to be accommodated on one shaft.
3οΈβ£ Hollow Splined Shaft
Uses a hollow construction to reduce weight while maintaining adequate torsional strength. Common where weight reduction is important.
4οΈβ£ Fl**ged Splined Shaft
Includes an integral fl**ge for mounting or connecting the shaft to another mechanical assembly.
5οΈβ£ Double Splined Shaft
Has two separate spline sections, allowing torque to be transferred to or from multiple components.
6οΈβ£ Internal Splined Shaft
Features spline teeth inside a hollow component and mates with an external splined shaft.
7οΈβ£ Taper Splined Shaft
Uses a tapered spline geometry or tapered mounting arrangement to improve positioning and secure assembly.
8οΈβ£ Involute Splined Shaft
Uses involute tooth geometry, providing good load distribution, alignment, and manufacturing flexibility.
9οΈβ£ Fine Splined Shaft
Uses a larger number of smaller spline teeth, allowing greater indexing flexibility and compact torque transmission.
π Male Splined Shaft
Has external spline teeth and typically engages with an internally splined hub or coupling.
1οΈβ£1οΈβ£ Female Splined Shaft
Has internal spline grooves and receives a mating external splined shaft.
1οΈβ£2οΈβ£ Heavy-Duty Splined Shaft
Designed with robust spline geometry and materials for high torque, shock loads, and demanding industrial service.
βοΈ How Splines Transmit Torque
The basic power-transfer path is:
Driver β Splined Shaft β Spline Teeth β Mating Hub β Driven Component
Multiple spline teeth share the transmitted load, reducing the dependence on a single key or keyway.
