BUSCALAN is a small barangay up in the mountains of Kalinga in Northern Philippines. It is a small and secluded community and can only be reached through narrow trails on steep mountain slopes. Buscalan is the homeland of the Butbut Tribe, once known as fierce headhunters among the Cordillera groups of people. But this practice has long been discontinued. It has recently gained tourism favors because of its respected elder Apo Whang-od who holds the recognition as the oldest and last surviving traditional Kalinga tattoo artist

APO WHANG-OD is known as the last mambabatok (Kalinga tattooist) from the tribe of Butbut in Buscalan, Kalinga. She has been tattooing for the past 80 years — including head hunters of the indigenous tribe, at the beginning of her long career.

To All Visitors of Sagada:
Sagada is not just a tourist spot. It is a sacred home to a proud community with deep ancestral traditions. Our burial sites , including the famous hanging coffins ; are not displays or props for photos. They are the final resting places of our loved ones.

Recently, someone held a human skull despite clear rules prohibiting such actions. This is not only disrespectful . It is deeply hurtful to the community.

When you visit Sagada:
Do not touch coffins, bones, or any burial remains.
Follow all posted rules and your local guide’s instructions.
Treat sacred sites with silence and dignity.
Remember that these are real ancestors, not attractions.
Respect is not optional. Cultural heritage is not for entertainment.

If you cannot respect the people, traditions, and sacred spaces of Sagada, then you should reconsider visiting.

Travel responsibly. Honor the land. Honor the ancestors.
