JUST IN: The price of gasoline may exceed ₱80 per liter next week if the expected fuel price hike pushes through and the conflict in the Middle East continues, according to the Department of Energy.

The Department of Energy (DOE) said gasoline and diesel prices in the Philippines could reach around P90 per liter amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

DOE Oil Industry Management Bureau Director Atty. Rino Abad said Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for oil tankers carrying Middle East supply, could force ships to take longer routes and increase shipping costs.

Abad noted that a similar price surge occurred in June 2022.

TATAAS ANG PRESYO ⛽️📈

Posibleng sumipa sa P90 kada litro ang presyo ng gasolina at diesel dahil sa tensyon sa Middle East, ayon sa Department of Energy (DOE).

Isinara ngayon ng Iran ang Strait of Hormuz na pangunahing daanan ng mga oil tanker na kumukuha ng supply sa Middle East. Dahil dito, mas mapapalayo ang ruta ng mga tanker na dadagdag sa shipping cost.

"Hindi malayo na mag-i-increase. Nakita na nga natin 'yun noong June 2022," ayon kay Atty. Rino Abad, Director ng Oil Industry Management Bureau ng DOE.

Nag-uusap naman ang kagawaran at mga kumpanya ng langis para sa staggered o utay-utay na pagpapatupad ng pinangangambahang taas-presyo. | via Gerard de la Peña
