β’ Slow down, look for an open area to stop; and pull over to a safe place where you are not blocking the road. Keep roads clear for rescue and emergency vehicles.
β’ Avoid parking near or under bridges, overpasses, signs, building overhangs, power lines, trees, or any other hazard or anything that could collapse.
β’ Stop the car and stay inside.
β’ Listen to your car radio for instructions from emergency officials.
β’ Do not attempt to get out of your car if downed power lines are across it. Wait to be rescued.
β’ Place a HELP sign in your window if you need assistance.
If you are in a public vehicle, stay in your seat until it stops. Take cover in a protected place. If you can't take cover, sit in a crouched position and protect your head from falling debris.
β’ Once the shaking stops, get out of your vehicle and assess any damage to your car and the immediate vicinity.
β’ Check yourself and your passengers for injuries.
β’ Do not drive your car, unless there is an emergency or until travel has been cleared by the authorities. Remember, it may be safer to stay where you are, particularly if there is chaos on the roads.
β’ If you are driving in a mountainous or rocky area, be wary of the potential for landslides on the road.
β’ Do not go sightseeing through damaged areas. You will only interfere with the relief effort. Keep streets clear for emergency vehicles.
